Communities In Schools of South Carolina

Surrounding students with a community of support. Our school-based staff partner with teachers to identify challenges students face in and out of the classroom.

Working directly in 39 schools across the state, Communities In Schools of South Carolina builds relationships to ensure over 21,000 students receive a quality education. We coordinate with community partners to bring outside resources inside schools through our evidence-based model of Integrated Student Supports. From immediate needs like food or clothing to more complex ones like counseling or social emotional support, we do whatever it takes to help students succeed.

Ma'lek's full-circle moment is a story of growth, determination, and the pursuit of a new career. 🎓

He is a recent graduate of Hampton County High School, where he completed the HVAC pathway through the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.

When Ma'lek first entered high school, he was quiet and reserved. He made it his goal to build new relationships and find his place among his peers.

“Ma'lek came to me as a freshman,” said Tonnya Grant, his CISSC Site Coordinator. “As time went by, he began to open up in group and individual sessions. He shared that CISSC helped him develop better social skills and guided him in discovering his career path."

Ma'lek's hard work, perseverance, growing self-confidence, and supportive circle helped him find a career path he is excited to pursue while continuing his college education.

Graduating senior Karson from Lower Richland High School is stepping into a full-circle moment 🎓

This fall, Karson will attend the University of South Carolina, where he's been hired by the football department to produce coaching videos.

His journey reflects growth, leadership, and the impact of consistent support. Throughout high school, Karson embraced mentorship opportunities, strengthened his communication skills, and became a leader among his peers.

Alongside earning a 4.8 GPA, Karson also supported school events, communicated with fellow seniors about activities, and served as a camera person for programs across campus.

His CISSC Site Coordinator, Avery Fields, shared that Karson’s willingness to accept coaching, apply feedback, and continue developing himself has made a lasting impact on those around him.

Graduation season is a time of full-circle moments 🎓

Meet Valery, a graduate of Berea High School who finished her studies early as valedictorian, was accepted into every college she applied to, and received a full scholarship to Converse University.

Beyond her impressive achievements, Valery’s story is one of resilience, growth, and hope. While balancing her roles in student council, cross country, and GirlUpGVL, and while enrolling in dual-enrollment/AP classes, she consistently showed up as a leader, a friend, and a person dedicated to her future.

Morgan Bookbinder, her CISSC Site Coordinator, shared that she witnessed Valery blossom with newfound confidence throughout the school year.
