Seventy-five years ago, a group of scientists formed The Nature Conservancy to protect threatened natural areas through direct action—often working with local communities to purchase lands outright. These are some of the milestones and pivot points that pushed TNC to grow, develop new strategies and engage with people like never before.

From local land protection to global impact, explore the milestones and turning points that shaped The Nature Conservancy’s first 75 years.

For 75 years, The Nature Conservancy has stood in a lot of remarkable natural places. Places that do more than take your breath away. Places that sustain life, and shape who we are. And we’ll continue to protect these places—for all generations.

“Without the financial support of federal, state and local agencies, along with a long list of private foundations and generous individuals, Chelsea’s future would have been much different,” said Executive Director Dale Threatt-Taylor.

Chelsea Plantation, once threatened by development, is forever protected through a conservation easement with the U.S. Navy and Open Land Trust. The property was purchased by TNC in 2025 and has now been transferred to the South Carolina Forestry Commission.

If these trees could talk, what would they say? National forests, wildlife refuges and other public lands give us still, speechless moments, that shape who we are and what we care for. We're grateful for these landscapes, which belong to all of us.

What can half a dozen oysters do? Quite a lot, actually.

When oysters grow together, they create reefs that provide habitat for fish and other marine life, help filter water and support stronger, more resilient coastlines.

For decades, The Nature Conservancy has worked with partners across North America to restore oyster reefs and the many benefits they provide to nature and people.

The Nature Conservancy’s work restoring oyster reefs has led the way in bringing back these critical coastal habitats, which protect coastlines and drive coastal economies as a food source.

Our marshes are incredibly adaptable. Change is constant with varying levels of water, salt, wind and other factors. To save our marshes, we need nature-based solutions.

The Nature Conservancy worked with 100+ partners to release a plan that includes increasing accessibility to living shoreline installations, removing barriers to marsh migration, educating local government and landowners on preservation priorities and more.

“As development continues to move south along the I-26 corridor, our natural spaces are increasingly under significant pressure,” Dale Threatt-Taylor, Executive Director of TNC in South Carolina.

Upstate residents will have new ways to explore the outdoors thanks to a project adding nearly 2,000 acres to the Sumter National Forest.

Being a burn boss means planning for multiple scenarios, monitoring weather conditions and thinking on your feet to guide safe, controlled fires. Our communities depend on their efficient, effective restoration work.

Prescribed fire keeps South Carolina’s forests healthy. But climate change and development make the burns harder to do.
