Supporting STEM education and connecting students with our nation's service members is one of the many ways we help inspire the next generation.

During the NIWC Atlantic IDEAS Camp at St. George, members of the United States Coast Guard Barque EAGLE volunteered while visiting Charleston in early June. Approximately 15 members of the crew spent time with campers, helping bring STEM concepts to life through hands-on activities and sharing their passion for learning and service.

According to camp organizers:
"The volunteers sparked curiosity, brought complex STEM concepts to life, and directly inspired our future innovators."

"Having the cadets there was frequently brought up as a favorite part of the camp."

Campers participated in engaging activities including:
🔹 UV biometric keychains
🔹 Light-up jars
🔹 Epoxy molds
🔹 Biometric mystery
🔹 Two-wheel balance cars

Thank you to the USCGC EAGLE for making a lasting impression on these young learners and helping inspire the next generation of innovators.

The Charleston Council of the Navy League was proud to support the Coast Guard 236th Birthday Celebration at Short Stay in Moncks Corner SC on August 4th. The Council sponsored the Kona Ice truck, handed out toys for the kids, encouraged participation in the upcoming Coast Guard Ball on August 29th, and solicited for new members. It was a great Coast Guard day!

Greater Charleston Council Supports Ribbon Cutting for expanded and improved NOAA Facilities in Charleston

The Greater Charleston Council of the Navy League of the United States engaged and supported the NOAA Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO) supporting the Ribbon Cutting for the Charleston waterfront’s major new addition. The innovative, expandable, state-of-the-art NOAA floating pier was successfully christened marking a significant milestone in NOAA’s investment in mission-ready maritime infrastructure.

This achievement represents more than the placement of a pier — it represents the successful delivery of modern infrastructure that strengthens NOAA’s operational readiness along the Charleston waterfront for years to come.

The new pier and facility provide essential support to NOAA Ship Nancy Foster, NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown, and the NOAA Corps officers and civilian mariners who rely on safe, resilient waterfront infrastructure to execute scientific and operational missions. In addition to the new pier, the project included adding new infrastructure delivering shoreside water and power, a new specialized operations support warehouse, sea wall and other vital support systems.

Charleston’s maritime community will gather on August 29, 2026, for the Inaugural Greater Charleston U.S. Coast Guard Tribute and Ball—celebrating more than 230 years of Coast Guard service and Charleston’s designation as an official Coast Guard Community.

Hosted by the Propeller Club of Charleston, the Charleston Council of the Navy League, and the Coast Guard Foundation, this historic evening will honor Coast Guard members who serve both our nation and our local community.

The United States Coast Guard Barque EAGLE is setting sail for Charleston, SC, and we want YOU to come aboard!

A Brief History of the EAGLE:
Known proudly as "America's Tall Ship," the 295-foot barque CGC EAGLE is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes and the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service. Originally built in Germany in 1936 and taken as a war reparation after
World War II, she was commissioned into the U.S. Coast Guard in 1946. Today, she serves as a vital floating classroom for future Coast Guard officers, teaching cadets and officer candidates the timeless arts of seamanship, leadership, and teamwork.

Step back in time, walk the teak decks, and learn more about this historic vessel directly from her crew!

Watch her arrival around 1100 on June 11th and take a tour, details below.
