Local National Deer Association Hall of Fame Branch Steps Up to the Plate for the Ohio Gators Youth Baseball Field - Louisville, OH

This summer, a unique partnership blossomed between two seemingly unrelated organizations, united by a shared love for the outdoors, teamwork, and community. The local branch of the National Deer Association (NDA) - Hall of Fame Branch, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to conservation and education, rolled up their sleeves — not for a food plot or wildlife habitat project this time, but for baseball.
When the Ohio Gators Baseball Club, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth baseball league, needed assistance maintaining their home field, the NDA Hall of Fame Branch stepped in with tools, a track loader, and heart.
Over the course of a weekend, NDA volunteers transformed the weathered field. They graded the infield, trimmed back overgrowth from the outfield fence line, and spread 60 tons of dirt to help level out the field. NDA members even brought their own equipment to help with drainage issues that had been plaguing the field all season. Kids, parents, and coaches from the Gators joined in, turning the project into a true community event.
“This is what stewardship is all about,” said Zachary Boldizsar, president of the NDA Hall of Fame Branch. “We’re usually out in the woods helping improve deer habitat, but at the end of the day, we’re just as committed to helping the next generation grow — whether that’s through conservation or coaching.”
For the baseball league, the help couldn’t have come at a better time. According to Matt Rugani, coach for the 2024 10U Ohio Gators, “We can't thank Zachary Boldizsar and the NDA Hall of Branch enough for their donation, use of equipment, and hard work to help deepen our infield and move several piles of dirt to help fill in areas of the infield that weren't level and would puddle up each and every time it rained, making it difficult to have home games during the spring."
The collaboration also opened the door for possible future events between the two organizations.
In a world that often highlights divisions, this partnership is a reminder that teamwork — whether on the field or in the forest — makes all the difference.

We wanted to let you know about an exciting opportunity for NDA members to purchase corn and soybean food plot seed. Through a national program we’re able to acquire out-of-date seed and provide it to our members at extremely reduced prices. The germination rate will likely be less than 100 percent, but still very good relative to cost of the seed. It’s important to note the seed can’t be sold for profit, traded or bartered, it has to remain standing for wildlife use, and it can’t be fed directly to livestock or wildlife as it is treated.

The Hall of Fame Branch is taking orders for glyphosate-resistant corn and glyphosate-resistant soybeans. The corn will be most likely be 90-110 day varieties and the soybeans a blend of early to mid-maturity. We will not know for sure until the seed ships, but those varieties are what is most likely to be available. Both are sold in 50-lb bags and the cost is $25/bag. The seed is expected to ship in late March to mid-April. Please note that NDA has no control over the actual ship date. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of the seed suppliers and shipping companies. However, in past years we have received the seed in time for spring planting dates. All orders can be picked at:13130 Warren Rd Paris, Oh 44669
If you are interested, place your order by February 15 at the link below. If you have any questions, contact Zachary Boldizar at 330-412-6167

The National Deer Association is pleased to offer the Conversation Seed Program to its members in order to help get viable seed planted across the landscape. The 2022 NDA Hall of Fame Branch’s Share Your Hunt was made possible by the generous donation from the QDMA/NDA Western Reserve Branch. This hunt was in memoriam of the Western Reserve’s branch volunteer: Rick Gray.

Last weekend’s hunt was located at our branch president, Zack’s property and introduced a brand new hunter, Randy Jimenez, who was eager to get out in the woods. Within an hour of sitting, Randy had the experience of a lifetime, and was able to harvest his first deer.
We practiced “Field to Fork”, where branch member, Nathan butchered the deer, and we were able to cook up delicious back straps that weekend. Randy was able to bring home venison and share with his wife and two daughters.

We would also like to thank all of our sponsors including: Ten Point Crossbows and Redneck Hunting Blinds for making this hunt possible.

Testing for CWD is an extra step, but it won't ruin your hunt. The technicians at check stations will not take your trophy antlers. They have been trained to remove the lymph nodes of your deer without damaging the cape, and often they will provide extra services, like aging or green-antler measurements, at the same time.

🦌 The extra weekend of gun hunting for white-tailed deer in Ohio concluded with 15,203 deer taken by hunters. Over the last three years, hunters checked an average of 12,461 deer during the same two-day period.

The ODNR just announced that it is requesting tissue testing of deer harvested in three Northwest Ohio counties for CWD:

For Immediate Release
December 17, 2020

Increased Chronic Wasting Disease Testing in Three Northwest Ohio Counties

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is asking white-tailed deer hunters in portions of Wyandot, Marion, and Hardin counties to submit samples of harvested deer for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) testing. Testing is voluntary but highly encouraged.

CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer populations. A CWD-positive wild Ohio white-tailed deer was recently identified in Wyandot County. The Division of Wildlife will implement its CWD response plan, which includes enhanced surveillance in 15 townships in the surrounding area, to monitor for the disease.

Additional testing will be available for those who take a deer during the weekend gun season, Dec. 19-20, the muzzleloader season, Jan. 2-5, 2021, and all remaining controlled hunts on Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area. Hunters in the following townships are asked to submit deer for CWD testing free of charge.

Wyandot County
• Antrim, Crane, Eden, Jackson, Mifflin, Marseilles, Pitt, Richland, and Salem townships
Hardin County
• Goshen Township
Marion County
• Big Island, Grand, Grand Prairie, Montgomery, and Salt Rock townships

Harvested deer can be taken to the Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area Headquarters, located at 19100 County Highway 115, Harpster 43323. Wildlife professionals will be on-site to sample deer from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Questions can be directed to 1-800-WILDLIFE (945-3543).

Hunters are asked to provide their confirmation number from the game check process as well as the location where the deer was taken (the address of the property or nearest road intersection are acceptable). The process should take no more than 10 minutes. Hunters are strongly encouraged to complete the game check process prior to arriving.

Each sample will be provided a unique specimen number which can be used to check results in approximately eight weeks. Results can be found under the District Two Enhanced Surveillance Results tab on the Chronic Wasting Disease page at wildohio.gov.

Hunters who plan to take their harvested deer to a taxidermist do not need to submit a sample at Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area. However, please call 1-800-WILDLIFE (945-3543) with the harvest location and taxidermist name, and a sample will be collected from the taxidermist for testing.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is no strong evidence that CWD is transmissible to humans. However, hunters are encouraged to wear rubber gloves when field dressing deer and avoid consuming high-risk tissues such as the brain, spinal cord, eyes, spleen, tonsils, and lymph nodes.

Hunters should dispose of carcasses by double-bagging any high-risk tissues and including them in household trash to be delivered to a landfill. Those who hunt out-of-state can help prevent the spread of CWD by following carcass regulations and not bringing high-risk tissues across state lines.

The Division of Wildlife has conducted routine surveillance for CWD since 2002, testing more than 25,000 deer without finding a CWD positive deer in the wild herd. CWD has previously been detected at captive deer breeding facilities in Ohio. Find more information about Ohio’s CWD surveillance at wildohio.gov.

CWD has been detected in 26 states and four Canadian provinces. The disease was first discovered in the 1960s in the western U.S. More information about this disease is available at cwd-info.org.

The mission of the Division of Wildlife is to conserve and improve fish and wildlife resources and their habitats for sustainable use and appreciation by all. Visit wildohio.gov to find out more.

ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at ohiodnr.gov.
