Women Veterans Recognition Day – June 12

Women Veterans Recognition Day is observed annually on June 12 to honor the service and sacrifices of women who have served in the United States military.

Why June 12?

The date commemorates the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act by President Harry S. Truman on June 12, 1948.

Before this law, women could serve during wartime, but their roles were often temporary and limited. The Act allowed women to become permanent, regular members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force.

Why Is It Important?

Women have served our nation since the American Revolution, often overcoming barriers and restrictions to answer the call to duty. Today, women serve in nearly every military occupation and leadership role, continuing a legacy of courage, dedication, and service.

Women Veterans Recognition Day acknowledges:

* The contributions of women throughout military history.
* The sacrifices made by female service members and their families.
* The growing role of women in defending our nation.
* The importance of ensuring women veterans receive recognition and support.

A Few Historical Milestones

* Women served as nurses, spies, and support personnel during the American Revolution and Civil War.
* During World War II, more than 350,000 women served in uniform.
* In 1948, the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act made women’s military service a permanent part of the Armed Forces.
* Today, women serve in combat roles, command positions, and every branch of the military.
