Happy to share an update from one of our Charity Connect clients, Dr. Lauren Rubin! Lauren became a client in 2019 and has volunteered her time as an optometrist with Mercy Health Clinic and with her family at Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. She tells us about her current volunteer experience with Guiding Eyes for the Blind
Sit, let’s go, come, place—these are just a few of the commands that Rona, our yellow lab puppy, practices. My family and I are raising Rona as a guide dog for Guiding Eyes for the blind. Guiding eyes for the blind is an organization that trains these remarkable dogs to become service dogs for visually impaired individuals. They are seeking volunteers like us to raise a puppy in their homes for approximately 12-18 months. During this time, the puppies learn essential house manners and acquire the skills necessary to become seeing eye dogs. Since Rona is still in training to become a service dog, we have the privilege of taking her on outings to expose her to various environments. She has had the opportunity to visit places like Trader Joe’s, CVS, high school sporting events, and even the mall. Additionally, she attends puppy class once a week.
These dogs require training to ensure they only pick up their toys, refrain from climbing on furniture, avoid counter surfing for food, and be crate trained. We have had the pleasure of meeting many dog-loving and caring individuals through guiding eyes for the blind.
