Across Kansas, transgender community members continue to experience the impacts of recent state policies affecting identification documents, access to public spaces, and other aspects of daily life.

Living in a rural community can sometimes make national issues feel distant. Yet solidarity reminds us that distance does not mean disconnection.

Today, we are inviting our community to join us in a simple act of care: writing letters of encouragement, support, and solidarity to transgender Kansans.

Your message can be short or long. It can share hope, kindness, encouragement, or simply remind someone that they are not alone.

Letters can be handwritten, typed, created as artwork, or shared as a personal note.

๐Ÿ“ง Email your letter to: [email protected]
๐Ÿ“ฑ Or send it to us through a direct message.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, it serves as both a remembrance of that history and a celebration of Black life, culture, and liberation.

What an incredible day of community, connection, and exploration along Oregon's beautiful South Coast.

This month, Soul Food Sunday partnered with Southwestern Oregon Community College Southwestern Oregon Community College for a special outing to Sunset Beach, where participants enjoyed tide pooling, beachcombing, coastal walks, and time together in community.

A huge thank you to Forrest Aker for serving as our amazing guide throughout the day! Forrest shared his knowledge of the local ecosystem, marine life, and coastal environment, helping participants experience the wonders of the tide pools in a meaningful and engaging way.

Soul Food Sunday was created by and for Black community members, including biracial and multiracial individuals, to foster connection, cultural celebration, learning, leadership, and mutual support across Coos and Curry Counties. Gatherings like these remind us of the importance of creating spaces where community can come together, build relationships, and experience joy.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and to our partners at Southwestern Oregon Community College for helping make this event possible.

We can't wait to see you at our next Soul Food Sunday gathering!

This morning, we gathered at Southwestern Oregon Community College to raise the Juneteenth flag and honor a tradition rooted in remembrance, resilience, and liberation.

As โ€œOh Freedomโ€ by the Golden Gospel Singers filled the air, we reflected on the generations who fought, dreamed, resisted, and persevered so that we could stand where we are today.

Juneteenth is more than a commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. It is a celebration of Black freedom, Black joy, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equity. It is a reminder that our ancestorsโ€™ hopes and sacrifices live on through us.

Today, we hold tightly to the truth that we are our ancestorsโ€™ wildest dreams.

May we continue their work by building communities where everyone can thrive, belong, and live with dignity.

We donโ€™t own the rights to the music.
