Step back in time and discover the vibrant mid-century transformation of Oakland’s Lake Merritt. Presented by Docomomo US/Northern California as part of Tour Day 2026, this immersive two-hour guided walking tour invites you to explore the modern architecture, dynamic landscapes, and visionary public projects that redefined the lakefront after World War II. Journey through over a dozen mid-century works, including the Oakland Museum of California, the Mid-Century Monster, the Geodesic Bird Dome, and the Lakeside Park Garden Center. Together, we’ll examine how post-war design shaped civic life, leisure, and open-space planning while influencing the modern city we know today.
Join us on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM for a 2.2-mile stroll through one of Oakland’s most scenic areas. Grab your walking shoes, pack some water, and connect with fellow design enthusiasts for an unforgettable afternoon celebrating Oakland’s rich architectural heritage. Join Docomomo US/NOCA and the UC Berkeley Environmental Design Archive for an in-depth tour of Ernest Born’s self-declared “masterpiece”: Glen Park BART Station. Completed in 1973 in collaboration with Corlett & Spackman, and landscape architect Douglas Baylis, it is considered one of the finest examples of Brutalism in the Bay Area.
We’ll explore Born’s sculptural concrete forms, his abstract marble mural, and the influence of his partner Esther Born, who shaped their projects. Together, they built a multidisciplinary practice connecting physical spaces, natural environments, and visual culture.

“She was direct and self-assured as she spoke. I was intimidated. She captivated me with stories of nights with Surrealists in Paris and dinner with a heavy-drinking Mies van der Rohe in Berlin.
As I sat on a well-loved Corbusier chaise, she took me through portfolios of drawings. She made it clear she wanted them to end up in museums.”
Docomomo NOCA’s Gary Leung explores the extraordinary life and unsentimental authority of the late Barbara Stauffacher Solomon. Read the full feature at the link in bio.
