Recently Carrabec High School students teamed up with the Embden Pond Association to survey Mullin's Cove for invasive aquatic plants such as Eurasian watermilfoil. The students paddled around the shore of the cove and inventoried all the aquatic plants we could find. Eurasian watermilfoil can form dense mats in ponds which choke out native plants, hinder recreational activities such as swimming and boating and reduce oxygen levels in the water as they decay. It can spread from one body of water to another if even a tiny fragment of the plant is transported on recreational watercraft or by other means. The students did great work and no invasive plants were found.
