North Andover Scholarship Foundation, Inc. Celebrates 50 Years!
Fifty years ago, Elizabeth Allen, the reference librarian at Stevens Memorial Library, and Irene Cook, a well-respected French teacher instrumental in establishing the National Honor Society at Johnson High School, decided to do something about the concern so many students had expressed about the cost of continuing their education. Together with a group of young businessmen, they established the North Andover Scholarship Foundation, Inc. (NASF).
“Neighbors Helping Neighbors” has long been the spirit behind NASF, an all volunteer, independent, non-profit organization. Thanks to the continued generosity of so many families and businesses in our community and beyond, NASF has awarded scholarships to worthy North Andover graduating seniors since 1963. For the past several years, the NASF has awarded scholarships to more than 25 students totaling over $40,000 per year. A significant number of the scholarships are based on need, others are awarded based on a student’s academic achievement, school and community service, or area of intended study; most are awarded based on a combination of these factors.
Scholarship candidates must be residents of North Andover, high school seniors graduating from an accredited secondary school, and who have applied to a recognized institution for higher education, technical or vocational training.
Applying for a NASF Scholarship is easy: applications are available from local school guidance counselors or may be downloaded on NASF’s website (www.nascholarship.org). Applications must be received by April 1, 2014. Please contact NASF at [email protected] with any questions.
