Sending a huge Thank You to everyone that joined us for our BINGO for Rhinos fundraiser last night! We had a sold out event and everyone had a great time! The proceeds from this fundraiser go to helping and sustaining rhinos and other wildlife, their environment and all the surrounding issues impacting the areas.

We’re happy to have our Diamondback Terrapins back on exhibit! Terrapins are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because of habitat loss, pollution and commercial harvesting. This is defined as “facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the immediate future.” Most states now have legislation regulating harvesting terrapins because of their depleted population.

They are a unique species among the North American turtles because they live in brackish water, which is a combination of salt and fresh water. They have been seen in salt marshes, wetlands, swamps, lagoons and tidal creeks along the eastern seaboard and Gulf of Mexico. The terrapins do need fresh water nearby for drinking.

Each shell is as unique as a fingerprint, with no two being alike.
Females grow to be a length of up to nine inches, with the males smaller at six inches. Females lay from 25-40 eggs per season, having multiple clutches of eggs from 4-23 at a time. The eggs can be from more than one male and the females can store semen for years! The temperature of the nest determines whether the clutch of eggs will be male or female.

The main foods of the terrapins are mollusks, snails, clams and mussels which they can crack with their sharp beak. Fish, carrion and invertebrates are also part of their diet.
