Montgomery County Emergency Service We are a nonprofit behavioral health emergency services that meets the needs of persons experiencing a psychiatric emergency or serious mental health crisis.

Our services are available 24/7 and include acute psychiatric inpatient care, a crisis center and su***de hotline, a crisis residential program (Carol's Place), and a psychiatric emergency medical service (EMS). We provide assistance in arranging involuntary emergency psychiatric evaluations for individuals who are felt to be a potential danger to themselves or to others through the Montgomery County Commitment Office (MCC)) under contract with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. Our programs include:

The Crisis Intervention Specialist (CIS) Program which provides mental health crisis intervention training to police officers, emergency responders, and other professionals on safely assisting persons with serious mental illness, developmental disability, and suicidality. The MCES Su***de Prevention Program which offers information, education, and technical assistance to health and human service providers, community groups, and other organizations on su***de risk and su***de loss. Our Crisis Center is a member of the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline Network.

Thirty-six years ago today, MCES was visited by 24 crew members of the USS Constellation who spent the day painting everything from railings to fire escapes in our "new" building. The Connie was at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for a 3-year Service Life Extension Program. Many community organizations benefitted from the crew's volunteer activities during that time.

The 50th Anniversary of our Crisis Intervention Specialist (CIS) Program will be observed later this week. Like MCES as a whole, CIS was developed to divert those with serious mental illness in crisis from criminal justice involvement. It does so by educating police officers to recognize possible symptoms and safely provide help. Over the years thousands of officers and other public safety professionals have taken the 3-day training as part of the longest running such program in the US.

We were very saddened by the recent passing of Bob Bond, who headed our crisis center for many years. Bob was one of our first employees and initially took mental health crisis calls when they came on a separate line from D&A calls in our earliest years. Bob was instrumental in shaping our crisis services so as to fulfill our mission to divert those experiencing a psychiatric emergency from criminal justice contact and led trainings of police officers in what is now our Crisis Intervention Specialist (CIS) Program. Bob touched the lives of innumerable people in crisis and almost as many MCES staff in his long tenure with us.

We have three great reasons to celebrate today. First, it is 988 Day. Second, MCES has been part of the National Su***de & Crisis Lifeline for 13 years. Third, but most importantly, MCES has an outstanding staff of 988 Counselors and Crisis Counselors serving callers from Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks, and Philadelphia Counties.
