Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing - Chattanooga, TN Program

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing - Chattanooga, TN Program The Chattanooga Program launched with the first meeting in August 2013 at Audubon Acres. Fishing outings and events are announced and discussed at meetings.

Dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel & veterans through fly fishing and associated educational activities. Due to growth of our Program we currently hold monthly meetings at Chestnut Hall in the beautiful Collegedale Commons. We have monthly meetings at which the many facets of flyfishing are demonstrated and explained by volunteer ex

perienced flyfishers, such as fly tying, fly casting, rod building, knots, and more. Volunteers guide each participant through the demonstrated activity with no pressure. We encourage disabled veterans and active service personnel to participate and enjoy learning something new and different. All flyfishing and tying equipment is provided to the participants at no cost to them. We view monthly meetings as "meat and potatoes", and fishing outings and events as "dessert" .... catching a fish on a recently tied fly is "icing" on the dessert. The program is more than just flyfishing. It has become a place where participants find an understanding camaraderie and socialization. We are not a "storytelling" organization (although you may hear the occasional fish story), and we won't ask a veteran "So, what's your story?". We strive to provide a new and different activity in a comfortable, safe environment away from day-to-day pressures. Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization that started in 2005 by serving wounded military service personnel at Walter Reed Army Medical Center returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since then, PHWFF has expanded nationwide, establishing highly successful programs in Department of Defense hospitals, Warrior Transition Units, Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and Community Based Outpatient Clinics, and other venues such as ours. There was a great turnout at our Chattanooga VA facility recently for the Veterans Expo which highlighted many wonderful organizations for veterans. We were invited several months back, so we participated with Henry demonstrating fly tying, which generated a lot of interest, while Jeff and Ross highlighted our Program with many veterans, answering a multitude of questions. We've already had a number of veterans register as Participants.

Here are some pictures and video from the PHWFF Chattanooga meeting on Thursday, April 2nd. It started with some preliminary casting practice on a warm breezy spring evening at the Commons in Collegedale near Chattanooga, Tennessee. After the casting, a meeting was held with some meet and greet time, discussion of some upcoming outings on the water, followed by some knot tying instruction led by Howard Brooks, fly tying instruction by Kevin Lagoo, and a writeup on how to use the fly from Ken Eaves. The fly being tied was a Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail. A link to the writeup on how to fish this fly is available at this link:

All in all, a very productive meeting. A special bonus was getting to see a very nice 1964 El Camino (see the video) owned by one of the volunteers . . .

Here are some highlights and pictures from the PHWFF of Chattanooga meeting on Thursday, March 5th, 2026. The activities started with some casting practice on a beautiful evening at the Commons in Collegedale near Chattanooga, Tennessee. A large crowd of 52 attended the evening meeting including volunteers and participants. The meeting started with a pledge to the flag, a meet and greet, a brief introduction to the evening events, followed by getting tied up in knots (knot tying instruction), some fundamentals of fly fishing information, and some fly tying, all going on at the same time. The fly tying instruction was on how to tie the Griffith’s Gnat. Griffith's Gnat is a classic, highly effective dry fly pattern designed to imitate small clusters of midges or individual adult midges on the water’s surface. Created by George Griffith, one of the founding members of Trout Unlimited, this fly has become a staple in trout anglers' boxes worldwide due to its simplicity and proven success, especially during midge hatches in winter, spring, and fall. Fly tying instruction was presented by volunteer Ken Eaves. All in all, a very productive evening! 😊
