Unbowed, undeterred and unstoppable, perfect words to describe Rebecca "Becca" Town.
Becca grew up facing hunger, instability, and homelessness. At just 10 years old, she lost her mother. At one point, she lived under a bridge by the OU Duck Pond, alone, for three weeks. “I never thought I’d live past 18, much less graduate,” she says.
But Becca never let go of one thing: her belief that education could change her life. Operation School Bell®️ helped provide the essentials she needed along the way, while a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor showed her that college wasn’t just a dream, but a real possibility.
On May 15, Becca graduated from the University of Oklahoma’s Price College of Business with a degree in Management, turning down a full ride to Harvard because she felt OU would give her more support. Along the way she worked full time, took emergency custody of her younger sister, and planned her wedding, all while finishing her degree.
Today, Becca is paying it forward. She now volunteers with Operation School Bell, helping kids the same way she was once helped.
“I want kids who grow up like I did to know it’s possible,” she says.
This is exactly why Assistance League of Norman exists. Thank you, Becca, for showing us what’s possible when a community shows up for a child. 💙
