Meet Soror Tanya Morris

Zeta Chi Sigma Alumnae Chapter’s 9th Poodle Focus

For Soror Tanya Morris, every move matters—whether she's making her next move on a chessboard, uncovering a piece of family history, or helping young people discover their potential. Soror Tanya believes in the power of knowledge, individuality, and creating opportunities for the next generation.
Soror Tanya earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma, and she earned master’s degree in criminal justice from Northeastern State University. She currently works for the federal government.

When asked why she chose Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Soror Tanya reflected on the genuine women she encountered during her undergraduate college years. Their commitment to academic excellence, campus involvement, and community service caught her attention. But what truly made an impression was their ability to encourage one another while celebrating each woman's individuality. She found a sisterhood where she could be herself, grow, and pursue her goals.

Of Sigma Gamma Rho’s five essential programs, Youth Symposium holds a special place in Soror Tanya’s heart. She believes young people thrive when they are encouraged to share their voices, ask questions, express their concerns, and engage in meaningful conversations about issues that affect their lives. The hands-on, interactive nature of Youth Symposium allows Sorors to connect with young people, build their confidence, and equip them with tools to make informed decisions. For Soror Tanya, empowering youth today means investing in tomorrow’s leaders.

And when she's not spending time with her own teenager or serving through sisterhood, Soror Tanya enjoys a different kind of adventure!

You might find her studying the chessboard, planning her next strategic move, or diving into genealogy research, uncovering family connections and stories from generations past. One hobby challenges her to think several moves ahead, while the other takes her on a journey through history. Both reflect her curiosity and appreciation for learning.

Why Is Supporting Mental Health Important?

“Mental wellbeing is a state of thriving. It is the foundation of living a strong, healthy and fulfilling life. We believe that mental wellbeing is achievable for everyone — including individuals living with or recovering from a mental health or substance use challenge.
Mental health is essential to overall wellbeing, yet millions of people still face barriers to care. In the U.S. alone, nearly 30 million people lack access to the mental health and substance use treatment they need. These aren’t just numbers — they’re our neighbors, coworkers, friends and family. The impact goes beyond individuals, touching workplaces, schools and communities. Consider these statistics:
• 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year.
• 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year.
• 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year.
• 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24

“Oklahoma ranks No. 1 nationally for lifetime domestic violence prevalence among both women and men, according to a new analysis…The study found 49.1% of Oklahoma women and 40.7% of Oklahoma men have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime, the highest rates in the nation for both sexes. The analysis drew on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, among other sources. Researchers noted the risk touches all 77 Oklahoma counties, from Oklahoma City and Tulsa to rural and tribal communities, where shelters, courts, hospitals, churches and local responders often serve as the first line of help before abuse escalates.

Nearly one in two Oklahoma women have experienced domestic violence, the report found.”

Meet Soror Amber Purcell

Zeta Chi Sigma Alumnae Chapter’s 8th Poodle Focus

For Soror Amber Purcell, caring for people isn’t limited to a profession, it’s simply part of who she is. Whether supporting families through difficult moments, encouraging women to take charge of their wellness, or gathering her own family around the table for a favorite meal, Soror Amber brings a caring spirit to the people around her.

Soror Amber is a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and the University of Southern California, where she earned her Master of Social Work. She currently serves as a Hospice Social Worker, providing support and compassion to individuals and families during some of life’s most personal and challenging transitions.

When asked why she chose Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., her answer was simple: sisterhood and Greater Service. She was drawn to an organization where meaningful relationships and service to the community go hand in hand.

Of Sigma Gamma Rho’s five essential programs, Women’s Wellness Initiative speaks most strongly to Soror Amber. For her, wellness begins with knowledge. As women grow and experience changes in their health, she believes it is important to understand what is happening, ask questions, and perhaps most importantly know we are not alone. That message of awareness, support, and connection makes Women’s Wellness especially meaningful to her.

And when Soror Amber steps away from service, a little adventure may be calling! She enjoys traveling with her family, discovering new places and experiences, and fitting in, a good shopping excursion along the way. But some of her favorite destinations are much closer to home right in her own kitchen, preparing the meals her family loves.

For Soror Amber, whether she is caring for a family, advocating for women’s wellness, exploring a new destination, shopping for the perfect find, or cooking something special for the people she loves, caring for others remains at the center of it all.
