We have been cleaning and stocking as often as we can. We appreciate those who are also dropping off items to help our unhoused friends and neighbors.

Today we handed out bottled waters, Gatorade, string cheese, frozen meals, hot pockets, uncrustables, mandarins, personal-sized snack trays with veggies, dips, meats, and cheese, and cooling neck wraps to 3 women as we stocked the fridge this afternoon.

Weekends are when services are at their most reduced, so it is super helpful to have options available at the fridge for those who still have to survive out in this heat. Some of these are people who are working jobs but still stay at our shelter hoping to save up enough to move on.

Mutual aid is for everyone. Mutual aid is community care. Mutual aid is an act of solidarity not charity.

Hemos estado limpiando y reponiendo existencias tan a menudo como podemos. Agradecemos a quienes también traen artículos para ayudar a nuestros amigos y vecinos sin hogar.

Hoy hemos repartido botellas de agua, Gatorade, tiras de queso, comidas congeladas, Hot Pockets, Uncrustables, mandarinas, bandejas de aperitivos individuales con verduras, salsas, embutidos y queso, y paños refrescantes para el cuello a tres mujeres mientras reponíamos la nevera esta tarde.

Algunas de estas personas tienen trabajo, pero siguen alojadas en nuestro refugio con la esperanza de ahorrar lo suficiente para seguir adelante.

This morning we saw only a few bottles of water were left in the fridge. We added Gatorade, water, apples, oranges, fruit pouches and yogurt pouches. We also emptied the trash.

Tonight we added popsicles, cooling neck wraps, sports drinks, waters, and uncrustables. We saw salad and assorted items left from a previous drop. We greatly appreciate those also coming by to stock the fridge and freezer with hydration and snacks.

We haven’t been posting as frequently as we’d like to, life and all that, but the Downtown Pantry crew has been adding items throughout the week because we know it’s pretty brutal to be out in this excessive heat. Tonight we added popsicles, cooling neck wraps, Gatorades, waters, squeezable fruit pouches, and bug repellent wipes. We spoke to a couple of people, a man and a woman, who weren’t staying at either of the night shelters nor the encampment off Reed. They said the cool items are great, and that they hope people keep coming by to add waters and Gatorades. There was a request for slim jims as a grab and go snack. Tomorrow morning we plan to add more “hydration station” options to the fridge.

We greatly appreciate those also coming by to stock the Fridge and Freezer with hydration and snacks.

No hemos estado publicando con tanta frecuencia como nos gustaría —ya sabes, la vida y todo eso—, pero el equipo de Downtown Pantry ha ido añadiendo artículos a lo largo de la semana porque sabemos que es bastante duro estar ahí fuera con este calor tan intenso. Esta noche hemos añadido polos, pañuelos refrescantes para el cuello, Gatorade, agua, bolsitas de fruta exprimibles y toallitas repelentes de insectos. Hablamos con un par de personas, un hombre y una mujer, que no se alojaban ni en ninguno de los refugios nocturnos ni en el campamento de Reed. Dijeron que los artículos para refrescarse son estupendos y que esperan que la gente siga pasando por aquí para añadir agua y Gatorade. Nos pidieron Slim Jims como tentempié para llevar. Mañana por la mañana tenemos pensado añadir más opciones para la “estación de hidratación” a la nevera.

We recently got some contributions that allowed us to puchase socks, hot hands, menstrual products, produce, ready-to-eat meals and snacks, frozen meals, milk, yogurt, fresh tortellini, deli meats and cheeses. While we were there, a man usung the pantry helped us tidy up and let us know what he was looking for - microwavable and ready-to-eat meals as he did not have a way to cook things on a stove. We do our best to incorporate feedback from those using this resource.

Recientemente recibimos algunas contribuciones que nos permitieron comprar calcetines, calentadores de manos, productos menstruales, productos frescos, comidas y aperitivos listos para consumir, comidas congeladas, leche, yogur, tortellini fresco, embutidos y quesos. We’re adding a few items this morning at around 10am. I wanted to post ahead of the drop off. Hopefully people can get stuff before the pantry raid ladies show up.

Yesterday (11/8) we made an early evening drop of Fridge and Pantry items after communicating online feedback to those Downtown Pantry volunteers not running the social media. The volunteer who did the evening drop reported back about the number of people encountered, so we will aim to do more of that in the future.

Most of the pantry side pictured was not us, which is great because we love to see others participating in this mutual aid project! A well-know-to-us Norman local stopped by just as we were leaving and added potatoes, onions, peppers and waters from the Feed Thy Neighbor event.

We also heard from Yellow Dog that their cameras caught two women taking everything for themselves earlier in the day after someone else filled the fridge and pantry, all while other people waited patiently for their turn and got nothing. That is not how this is supposed to work. Even people with the least food security who use this resource generally take what they need and leave what they don’t behind for others to have, too. If this type of thing happens again, we will come up with a strategy to reduce these incidents, for example, only posting about our drops hours after they are made and communicating within niche resource groups about when we will make a drop so those folks have a heads up before the hoarders can appear. And while we have the faces and other identifying details of these two women on camera, we only plan to share that with other Pantry organizers who encounter the same issues so we can make note of them and limit the impact of their anti-social behavior.

Ayer (8 de noviembre) hicimos una entrega temprano por la tarde de artículos para la nevera y la despensa después de comunicar los comentarios en línea a los voluntarios de Downtown Pantry que no gestionan las redes sociales. El voluntario que hizo la entrega por la tarde informó sobre el número de personas con las que se encontró, por lo que intentaremos hacer más entregas de este tipo en el futuro.

La mayor parte de la despensa que se ve en la foto no es nuestra, lo cual es estupendo, porque nos encanta ver que otras personas participan en este proyecto de ayuda mutua. Un vecino de Norman muy conocido por nosotros se pasó justo cuando nos íbamos y añadió patatas, cebollas, pimientos y agua del evento Feed Thy Neighbor.

También nos enteramos por Yellow Dog que sus cámaras captaron a dos mujeres llevándose todo para ellas mismas a primera hora del día, después de que otra persona llenara la nevera y la despensa, mientras otras personas esperaban pacientemente su turno y se quedaban sin nada. No es así como se supone que debe funcionar esto. Incluso las personas con menos seguridad alimentaria que utilizan este recurso suelen coger lo que necesitan y dejar lo que no necesitan para que otros también puedan disponer de ello. Si este tipo de cosas vuelven a ocurrir, elaboraremos una estrategia para reducir estos incidentes, por ejemplo, publicando información sobre nuestras entregas solo unas horas después de que se hayan realizado y comunicando dentro de los grupos de recursos especializados cuándo vamos a hacer una entrega, para que esas personas estén avisadas antes de que aparezcan los acaparadores. Y aunque tenemos las caras y otros detalles identificativos de estas dos mujeres en cámara, solo pensamos compartirlo con otros organizadores de Pantry que se enfrentan a los mismos problemas, para que podamos tomar nota de ellas y limitar el impacto de su comportamiento antisocial.

We did a quick wipe down and added $85 dollars of sugar free vitamin waters, Caprisuns, apple sauces, cheddar cheese sticks, peanut butter and grape jelly uncrustables, frozen breakfast sandwiches, protein snack packs, cutie mandarins, and honey crisp apples.

There’s often a service gap on weekends when unsheltered and low income resources are closed. We chose to restock today also knowing SNAP benefits did not get deposited yesterday.

Hicimos una limpieza rápida y añadimos 85 dólares en aguas vitaminadas sin azúcar, Caprisuns, compotas de manzana, palitos de queso cheddar, bocadillos de mantequilla de cacahuete y mermelada de uva, sándwiches congelados para el desayuno, paquetes de aperitivos proteicos, mandarinas y manzanas Honeycrisp.
