Celebrate our Norfolk Kiwanis Leadership!

Thank you, Chris Bryant for your leadership as our President for the last year. Congratulations on being elected as the next 2026-2027 Vice Governor, Kiwanis Capitol District!

Celebrate the excellent Past Presidents of our Club, one which began in 1919, the oldest in the Commonwealth.

Roy Cooper, may be our oldest Kiwanis (100 years old I believe) but also is our most loyal with perfect attendance for another year!

Our guest speaker Blair Durham, Co-Founder and CEO of Black BRAND, shared the exciting new initiatives the organization has underway. They are expecting new funding soon, a turn for the better, after the 2025 challenges of limiting DEI. Thank you, Blair, for all you do in our community for small businesses!

This coming Thursday will be important to attend to hear where we are on our auction and volunteer needs for the upcoming 2026 Swing Fore Charities Golf Classic and for our speaker, Kate Wilson, Associate Vice President for Development
Hampton Roads Community Foundation. Let's have a great showing! Be sure to register online. If you would like to volunteer for our Golf Classic or attend a meeting soon, please contact us at 757-652-1225.

We are growing by leaps and bounds! I have lost count of how many new members we will induct on the first Thursday of October.

We had a packed room at Town Point Club Thursday with guests including members of the Kiwanis Club of Chesapeake! Great to see Aaron Phillips, leader of the pack!

Tom Claud was our presenter, who joined the Norfolk Kiwanis Club in 1982 and has served on the club board, and as Club President and as Foundation Board President. Tom shared about his recently published book: Stories from My Life: A Child of the 40’s and 50’s” - a Nostalgic Memoir Reflecting on Childhood, Family, and the
Adventures of Growing Up.

Laurie Harrison accepted a check from Gary Layne representing our Foundation for $7275 to benefit an EVMS scholarship. Denny reminded us how important it is the "show up" for the golf tournament, especially with auction items!

Don't miss this week's meeting! Blair Durham Co-Founder & CEO, Black BRAND, Hampton Roads Regional Black Chamber of Commerce. Durham received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Virginia Tech and her master’s degree in professional counseling from Liberty University.

Our 2026 Swing Fore Charity Golf Classis is Friday, September 25th. Love FRIDAY Golf Tournaments? Come on out!

To hit our $50,000 goal, we need 100% participation from our club to find sponsorships and auction items. The ultimate success of this fundraiser directly depends on every single member bringing in at least one item for our auction or raffle. No donation is too small or too large.

To make it easy, here is a breakdown of the specific items that are attractive to the event participants: High-Value Items • Weekend getaways • Hotel stays • Premium harbor cruises • Business services • Medium-Value Items • Winery and vineyard tastings • Relaxing spa days • Local restaurant and store gift cards • Custom themed gourmet baskets (liquor, snacks, popcorn, w**e, charcuterie) • Bottles of w**e or liquor • "Night Out" (movie tickets & dining adventures) • Coffee Lover's mug & coffee • Golf Paraphernalia & Lower-Value Items • Premium golf gloves or balls • Branded hats and visors • Packs of high-quality tees • Miscellaneous golfer accessories and gear • Premium coolers, drink mugs • Lottery tickets • Cash is welcomed and will buy additional item

Another great meeting last week! Our Guest Speaker was Rob Frantz, Secretary of the Hampton Roads Rowing Club. Thank you Rob! Debbie Stitzer-Brame accepted a $6000 donation to EDMARC from Foundation President Pat Kelly.

Rob Frantz with Hampton Roads Rowing Club will be our speaker for our meeting this week. Club members…don’t forget to rsvp!

Hope to see you next Thursday as well to learn more about the Virginia Zoo renovations. Our speaker for this topic is Suping Li, President and Co-founder of GARC LLC, a boutique Norfolk architecture studio recognized with the AIA Coastal Virginia Firm Award and named Hampton Roads Chamber Small Business of the Year. With over 25 years of experience, Suping has worked on projects ranging from cultural institutions and educational spaces to adaptive reuse and high-end custom homes.

Suping is passionate about enriching lives through design and making a positive community impact. A former member and chair of the City of Norfolk Architecture Review Board, she actively contributes to the local community through roles on HRACRE and CREW CoVA committees and the Downtown Norfolk Council Board.

Kiwanis Club of Norfolk supports our region's nonprofits in many ways. Members and friends of Kiwanist, we are looking for volunteers to cook at Ronald McDonald House on August 24th. For details and to volunteer, please contact Doug Knack at [email protected].

Thank you, Shelly Averett, the Executive Director of Fear2Freedom, a local nonprofit which supports so many sexually abused, homeless, and trafficked people in our region.

As always, Kiwanis Club of Norfolk has been known for decades to provide a forum for educating and fundraising to support our local charities.
