🇺🇸 Recognizing Juneteenth — June 19, 1865
On this day in 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of all enslaved people - more than two months after the Confederacy's surrender and nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation!
For the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Juneteenth carries profound meaning. It was the men we honor - the soldiers of the Union Army - our ancestors - who fought, bled, and died to make this moment possible. Among them were the approximately 180,000 Black soldiers of the United States Colored Troops, who took up arms in their own cause and ours, and whose service helped turn the tide of the war.
Freedom became real on June 19th. We remember that day and rededicate ourselves to honoring the full legacy of those who secured it.
SUVCW - Defenders of the Union. Guardians of its Memory.
