The Muse Writers Center The Muse Writers Center is the inclusive heart of the creative writing community in Southeastern Vir We are a sanctuary for writers. We are community builders.

We provide a sacred space for learning the craft of creative writing, sharing creative work, and fostering a nurturing environment for personal expression and development where writers come together, share ideas, and experience the power that words can hold. We are professional and compassionate teachers. Our talented and dedicated teachers are working literary artists who meet writers where they are and help them reach their fullest potential. We are committed to diversity. We strive to create, welcome, and celebrate a diverse community of writers, highlight underrepresented voices, and embrace the power of words to offer thoughtful and provocative commentary on diversity in our society. We offer events that foster engagement, intellectual and creative stimulation, and a stronger sense of belonging. We are committed to accessibility and equity for all. We are committed to ensuring that no barriers, financial or otherwise, stand in the way of access to the literary arts. We employ innovative programming, outreach, and technology to serve communities in Hampton Roads and beyond, while constantly striving to adapt to and thrive in the rapidly changing world.

This is a guide to creating a feared character–a true villain, that’s not a human. So, no politicians, terrorists, or slow-mo-sapiens in line at the grocery store. He he, but seriously, this class is all about creating the scary and personifying it. We’ll explore monster origins, habitats, body forms, names, powers, and more. We’ll discuss well-known monsters from literature, film, TV, and comics as we begin to craft a terrifying monster of our own. No misunderstood creatures, no anti-heroes, just monstrous villains we can all love to hate. Toi can’t wait to see what scares her the most.

💛 Your sponsorship supports writing classes, scholarships, youth education programs, public events, and literary outreach that strengthen the cultural life of Hampton Roads. Together we can create a memorable capstone to America 250 while investing in future generations of writers and thinkers.

🌟 Our extensive, free outreach program transforms lives by integrating the innate benefits of creative writing with healing for self-discovery, connection, and empowerment. We created programs, which are doubling in size each year, for those dealing with severe illness, domestic trauma, loneliness, disability, homelessness, bereavement, and loss, as well as for youth in crisis, wounded veterans, and seniors living in memory care.
