Civic Leagues MATTER! Trust me… 🫡

Neighbors in the eastern part of Norfolk are pushing for more investment in their community after funding for a promised recreation center and library didn't appear in the city manager's proposed budget.

During the 2025 State of the City address, Mayor Kenny Alexander announced plans for the new facility on the city's Eastside. The budget adopted by the city council last year carved out $1 million for the project's planning. However, when neighbors like Kathy O'Hara reviewed the city manager's proposed budget for the upcoming year, the project was missing. "The whole page was gone," O'Hara said.

The frustration led members of local civic leagues to invite Norfolk City Councilman Carlos Clanton to speak with them Monday night. Despite the now restored funding, Eastside neighbors still have questions on how the city can move forward with redeveloping both MacArthur Center and Military Circle at the same time.

🚨 April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month! 🚔🚨

The Norfolk Police Department is continuing to partner with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during the month of April to recognize Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and to remind drivers that staying focused behind the wheel saves lives.

According to Virginia’s most recent statewide numbers during 2024, there were 20,758 crashes involving a distracted driver. Of those crashes, 90 people were killed and 11,256 individuals were injured.

These crashes are preventable, and Norfolk Police are committed to reducing distracted driving through education, enforcement, and engagement.

Distraction comes in many forms. Whether your mind wanders, your hands leave the wheel, or your eyes stray from the road, any lapse in attention impairs your ability to drive safely. Texting is especially dangerous because it combines all three types of distractions – visual, manual, and cognitive.

Norfolk Police and NHTSA share the same message: If you’re driving, just drive. Put the phone away. Avoid multitasking. Protect yourself and everyone sharing the road.

For more information on distracted driving prevention, visit NHTSA.gov.
