Thank you, Rotary Club of Norfolk VA & Rotary Club of Town Center!

Next Step to Success just received an $11,000 grant to furnish a mental wellness room for our students — made possible by a $9,000 award from Rotary District 7600, plus additional funding from both clubs. 💛

NSTS provides free after-school and summer programming for Norfolk Public School students ages 13–18 — academic support, career exploration, tutoring, meals, transportation, mental wellness support, and a phone-free environment built for focus.

The results speak for themselves: 100% of our past seniors have graduated on time, going on to higher education, training, the military, or the workforce. And we're growing — as we move into our new campus on the former DePaul Hospital site, we'll expand from 120 students to as many as 400.

Thank you, Rotary, for helping us fill the cracks in our students' foundation and spark their potential. 🙌

Our youth opened a food hall today. 🍓

They researched menu options, priced ingredients, designed their own marketing, and calculated profit margins — then ran real stalls and served real customers, who paid in Next Step to Success Bucks.

Strawberry lemonade, sliders, s'mores, chocolate-covered strawberries. All of it planned, priced, marketed, and sold by our teens.

What a day at Next Step to Success! 💛

Today we welcomed Elizabeth River Crossings — CEO Anna Bonet and Communications Manager Carley McClintock — to see our STEM Summer Camp in action and celebrate a $10,000 gift supporting the program.

Here's what made today special: every challenge our students tackled was modeled on the real engineering work ERC does under the Elizabeth River. They designed tunnel flood prevention systems, building barriers and drainage to keep water out. Then they engineered collision protection for a "passenger," testing what it actually takes to keep someone safe.

These aren't hypothetical problems. They're the exact challenges the people who maintain the Downtown and Midtown Tunnels solve every single day — and today our students got to solve them too, then explain their designs to the team that does it for real.

That's what happens when a partner doesn't just write a check, but shares what they actually do.

Thank you, Anna, Carley, and the entire ERC team — for sponsoring our STEM activities all summer, for the care that went into building these challenges around your work, and for showing up in person to see what you helped create.

Our scholars got to explore the Aviation Institute of Maintenance this week, and it was an unforgettable, hands-on look at what a career in aviation maintenance really looks like!

AIM is a hands-on trade school that builds aviation careers, training students in aircraft maintenance and avionics inside labs built for real-world work — and our youth got to see that firsthand, exploring the hangar, checking out real aircraft up close, and even climbing inside a plane cockpit! From STEM building activities to a full tour of the maintenance bay, this trip gave our scholars a glimpse into a whole new world of career possibilities they may have never considered before.

Huge thanks to AIM for opening their doors and showing our youth what's possible when curiosity meets hands-on learning! 🛩️

This Tuesday, we had come perform and connect with our youth at Next Step to Success!

Founded in 1996 through the Virginia Arts Festival, The Rhythm Project is a world percussion ensemble dedicated to nurturing self-esteem through individual and cooperative achievement — and that mission lines up perfectly with what we work to build in our own scholars every day. The program has grown across Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Portsmouth schools, and their All-Stars have gone on to earn international acclaim performing steel drums at a professional level.

Watching our youth experience live music, discipline, and teamwork in action — all wrapped in pure joy and rhythm — was such a powerful reminder that confidence and grit can be built in more ways than one. Thank you, , for sharing your talent and your mission with our NSTS family!

From Chicken & Waffles Monday to Southern Pulled BBQ Chicken Friday, our kitchen crew is bringing the flavor all week long — including two Field Trip Day grab-and-go lunches on Tuesday and Wednesday!

Earlier this week, our youth rolled up their sleeves to help beautify our campus! From clearing debris to loading up a trailer full of trash and old furniture, they put in real work to keep our community space clean, safe, and welcoming.

🔧⚡ Tuesday was all about STEM! Our youth took on a hands-on engineering challenge, building structures with sticks and clay to explore stability, balance, and design — testing what shapes and supports hold up best.

From towers to platforms, every build was a chance to problem-solve, experiment, and think like real engineers. Proud of the creativity and persistence on display! 💡
