Happy Pike Day!

The Pike was the main thoroughfare of amusement concessions at the 1904 St. Louis World fair. Like a carnival midway today, the Pike was filled with attractions designed to entertain the masses while draining their wallets. While the fair opened in April, many Pike attractions were still being completed, making the June 4 ceremony the official launch of the entertainment district. Pike Day celebrations included the Parade of Nations, a lacrosse match between Native American teams, and a variety of performances put on by representatives of the Pike concessions.

Picture is a view of fair visitors crowding the Pike on Pike Day, June 4, 1904 via the St. Louis Public Library Digital Collections.

World’s Fairs were always grand six month long exhibitions that enthralled fairgoers across the globe. Attendees returned home with stories filled with excitement and wonderment. However, not all of the stories ended well. While each fair had many amazing stories, they each had an underlying darker story to tell. This lecture will focus on the stories of calamities, malice, accidents, and other tragedies of the world’s fairs.
