Meet one of our summer interns Kiera!✨ We asked her a couple of questions about her experience so far working at the museum.
What program are you currently enrolled in?
- I am currently enrolled at Old Dominion University (ODU), where I am majoring in History and minoring in Art History.
What do you hope to do with your degree?
- I hope to use my bachelor’s degree to pursue a master’s degree in Museum Studies, History, or Curatorial Studies. While completing my master’s degree, I hope to work at an art museum, a general history museum, or a historic site. After earning my master’s degree, my ultimate goal is to become a museum curator.
What made you choose HHVM for your internship?
- I chose HHVM for my internship because I had always been curious about the museum, especially after my boss at the art library told me about it while she was reading a book about the Hunter family and their home. I also met one of the staff members, Hanna Kirby, when she visited my Public History class to speak about HHVM. We discussed the possibility of an internship, and after that, I was sold!
Do you have a favorite object in the collection/space in the house?
- I love the World’s Fair exhibit that HHVM has on display this summer, especially after researching the foods that were introduced or made famous at different World’s Fairs and studying what the admission tickets looked like. I also love the parlor because of its beautiful red wallpaper and dragon cabinet. Other favorite features include the floral wallpaper in Lizzie’s morning room and the stained-glass window in the entrance hall, just before the staircase.
Keira's internship is through the Monarch Humanities Internship Academy, which offers ODU humanities students the opportunity to connect their skills, talent, and knowledge as humanists to meaningful, paid work-based learning experiences.
