KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Council 367 Knights of Columbus Norfolk Council 367
"The First Council in the South"
Established 1898 Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J.

McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities. The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.

Afterwards, he began his long career as a probation officer with the Norfolk City Courts System until retirement.

Bill was a lifelong member of The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception. He volunteered as a cook in the church’s soup kitchen and served in the bereavement ministry. He was known to attend Mass on Saturday’s and Sunday’s, often providing transportation for elderly members of the congregation. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, holding a variety of roles and leadership positions, receiving a myriad of awards and recognition.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Karen Carr Davis. His memory will forever be cherished by his brother Lawrence Carr (Patty) of Napa, CA, and his nieces who affectionately called him ‘Uncle Junnie’: Christina Robinson (Steve) of Bowie, MD; Cheryl Lawton (Cleon) of Suffolk, VA; Kris Carr of San Antonio, TX; and Valerie Sampson (Dwayne) of Richmond, VA; seven great nephews and nieces of which he was extremely proud, four great-great nephews and nieces, and a host of family and friends. The family is forever grateful to Ms. Lillian Alston Cousar for providing him with excellent caregiving and friendship.

A memorial repast is planned for Thursday, August 6 at 12 noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 232 Chapel St., Norfolk, VA. A graveside homegoing celebration will follow at 2:00 pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, 3000 Granby St., Norfolk, VA. All are welcome.

We are sad to report on the passing of Sir Knight William (Bill) A. Carr, Jr. yesterday.

SK Bill’s health has not been good for many years as he was on dialysis three times a week, had numerous surgeries, and broken bones from falls. But through it all, he always remained positive, thanked the good Lord he was still alive, and constantly had the Catholic channel EWTN on so he could stay more in touch with his Catholic faith.

No matter what condition he was in, when asked how he was doing, his response was always, “I’m doing the best I can!” When you asked him about his surgeries or other ailments he was going through, he’d always say, “I’m not complaining, just explaining.”

SK Bill was very proud to be a 4th degree Knight and has had his headstone made many years ago with the 4th degree emblem, his picture as a 4th degree Sir Knight, and the words “Tempus Fugit” at the bottom of the headstone. “Tempus Fugit, Memento Mori” is the Knights of Columbus motto which means, “Time Flies, Remember Death.” The clover on the tombstone was symbolic for his birthday on St Patrick’s Day. Bill was our Irish Brother!

SK Bill was a true Catholic gentleman and treated everyone with respect and kindness. He was usually praying for many of us. The only people that Bill might not have quite trusted were the Bingo ladies at the Council back in the day when we had Bingo nights. He always warned us that they’ll ask for a certain amount of scratch off tickets, change their minds constantly and while handing money back and forth, you’d finally realize you had less money while they had more tickets.

SK Bill taught us not to say you were “too busy” to do something. He said there will come a time in your life that your physical or mental abilities will keep you from helping with anything and that you wished you were “too busy.” If your “too busy” then thank the good Lord, you can handle it.

We usually end this by saying, “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon him.”

SK Bill always requested after every phone call or visit to say a “Hail Mary” before you hung up or left. In honor of Bill:

"Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen".

Vivat Jesus Sir Knight!
