Noon Optimist Club of Norfolk

Noon Optimist Club of Norfolk We sponsor Junior Optimist Octagon International (JOOI) clubs at the Norfolk Middle School, Junior and Senior High Schools.

The Norfolk Noon Optimists gather on Fridays for food and fellowship as well as fun activities throughout the year to help “Bring Out the Best in Youth, our Community and Ourselves”! The Noon Optimist Club of Norfolk is a group of like-minded men and women who believe it's important to "Bring Out the Best in Kids" and to live in accordance with The Optimist Creed. Club members participate in such

projects as Operation Christmas Tree, Cool to Be in School and the Norfolk Youth Track program. We collaborate with Goldenrod Hills Head Start to provide a Turkey Dinner for families as well as quarterly game or movie nights!

The Norfolk Noon Optimists had the opportunity on Monday, May 11th, to help recognize several students at the Norfolk Jr. High who were nominated by their teachers for our annual “Unsung Heroes” recognition. Each was nominated for “having overcome obstacles to accomplish something noticed by others”. This is purposely vague and each student’s obstacle probably differed, but each one was overcome and noticed by their teachers. While lots of students are recognized for athletic, artistic or musical talent, academic achievement or leadership, we were looking for something different. The Noon Optimists choose to recognize students who demonstrated “grit” this school year. It’s one of our highlight events of the year!

The Norfolk Noon Optimists wrapped up their Spring offering of Prime Time Family Reading Time with fourteen families (seven of them Spanish speaking) at the Norfolk Public Library on Tuesday, April 28th. Nine of these families attended each of the six weeks and none missed more than once. Following a light dinner provided by the Noon Optimists, participants read Annie and The Old One and discussed it in relation to this week’s theme, “Resilience and Hope”. Childcare was again arranged by the Early Childhood Program at NECC. Gift books were given, prizes drawn for and certificates handed out. The Noon Optimists collaborate with Humanities Nebraska to bring Prime Time to Norfolk!

Don Wisnieski was our speaker at the Noon Optimist meeting at Perkins on Friday, April 24th. Wiz talked to us about the Norfolk Freedom Point project at SkyView Lake. The project honors those who served and continue to serve our country. This community-driven effort features a 122-foot flag pole and will be a place of reflection, education and unity for generations to come. The sale of commemorative bricks is primary way to support this effort. Count us in!
