Want to help make Norfolk more connected, vibrant, and welcoming? 🌿

Join the ERT Team!

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation is growing and we're looking for a few community-minded folks to join our team as we continue building meaningful experiences, programs, and connection along the trail.

We're currently hiring for:

💙Internships (Part-Time | Seasonal)
Gain hands-on experience in areas like nonprofit operations, marketing, communication, events/programming, community engagement and trail maintenance.

💚Spinclusion Program Manager (Part Time | Seasonal)
Lead one of our most impactful programs, creating adaptive cycling experiences for seniors, veterans, and individuals with mobility challenges.

🧡Trailside HQ Hospitality Host (Multiple Volunteer Roles Available)
Help create a welcoming experience for visitors at our Trailside Headquarters while sharing information about the ERT, programs, and ways to get involved.

Working at the ERT means doing work that helps people connect to nature, movement, Norfolk and each other. No two days are ever quite the same, and that's part of the fun! It's meaningful, rewarding work and we have a whole lot of fun while doing it.

If you're passionate about community, accessibility, events, recreation, nonprofit work, communications, or creating meaningful experiences for others, we'd love to hear from you. In-depth job and volunteer role positions are available on our website, link in the comments.

Memorial Day in a military community carries a different kind of weight.

Here in Hampton Roads, remembrance is intertwined into everyday life.

This past Wednesday, our Spinclusion volunteers spent the morning at the Jones & Cabacoy Veterans Center in Virginia Beach for a Memorial Day ride with a group of veterans. Flags and pinwheels were waved in the breeze as veterans smiled and thoroughly enjoyed soaking up some fresh air while volunteer pilots pedaled them through the beautiful campus on patriotic decorated adaptive bikes.

Along the Downtown Norfolk section of the ERT, moments of remembrance are woven into the landscape. As the trail winds through Town Point Park and toward Freemason, visitors pass places that honor military service and sacrifice, including the Armed Forces Memorial, Homecoming statue, the USS Wisconsin, and the Lone Sailor statue.

Near the Pagoda, the newly dedicated Gold Star Families Memorial Monument (December 2025) offers another place for quiet reflection and honors those who gave their lives in services as well as their families who carry their legacy.

Today, we remember the fallen and hold space for the families, veterans, and communities forever shaped by their sacrifice. ❤️🤍💙

We're not saying you have to hug a tree today, but we are saying that Kindra and Brittany already did.

Happy National Hug a Tree Day from the ERT Team! 🌳🤗 We love all our trail trees and they deserve to know how much we appreciate the shade, habitat, oxygen, and beauty they provide for our 700,000+ trail users each year.

This particular (and undeniably gorgeous) Hackberry tree is located at Plum Point Park. It just so happens to be one of Kindra's favorite trees along the entire 10.5 mile trail!

Do you have a favorite tree, shady spot, or peaceful place along the ERT? No matter what, we highly recommend stepping outside, hugging a tree, and romanticizing your life for a minute today.

Bonus points if it happens on the trail! 💙🧡💚
