🎨 Hampton Roads artists, we want to see what you’re creating!

LGBT Life Center is partnering with Studio Pacheco on the CommYOUity Canvas Project, a call for LGBTQ+ artists to help bring more color, visibility, and creative expression into our community space.

Your work can help make the Center feel even more like a place where people can see themselves, feel welcome, and connect.

Submissions are $30 and due by September 14.

Some people serve on a board. Others roll up their sleeves, stay beside you through the hard seasons, and help move an organization forward. Lisa Stafford did all of that.

As Board President, Lisa stood unapologetically with LGBT Life Center through challenges, changes, and some of our most important moments. She brought conviction, loyalty, and plenty of energy to everything she took on.

And we have to say it: nobody could organize an auction quite like Lisa. Her work on the Brunch Gala auction was legendary, and she absolutely crushed her leadership role.

As Lisa ends her board service, we are proud to recognize her with beautiful wine glasses created by an artist from the Chrysler Museum of Art’s Perry Glass Studio. A fitting gift for someone who has given us so many reasons to raise a glass.

Lisa, thank you for your leadership, your strength, and the many years you stood firmly beside us. You helped carry LGBT Life Center through more than most people will ever know, and we are stronger because you did.

Cheers to you, Lisa. We’re incredibly grateful.

Today, we’re remembering Tim Curry, whose performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show helped make space for something that still matters deeply: the freedom to be loud, playful, sensual, complicated, and fully yourself.

For generations of LGBTQ+ people, Rocky Horror was more than a midnight movie. It was an invitation to show up differently, find your people, and celebrate the parts of yourself the world may have told you to hide.

Thank you, Tim Curry, for a performance that gave so many of us permission to be a little bolder.

Rest in power.

Today, the world lost some sparkle.

To LGBTQ+ people, Dolly was more than an icon. She loved us without qualification. She supported marriage equality, stood up for transgender people in her home state of Tennessee, and used her extraordinary cultural power to remind the world that kindness should not be complicated.

“Lord, I’ve got enough problems of my own to pass judgment on somebody else,” she once said. “I try to love everybody.”

That was Dolly. Funny, direct, and deeply kind.

She understood something the world still struggles to learn: people should not have to be debated before they can be loved. For generations of LGBTQ+ people, she offered joy, comfort, reinvention, big hair, even bigger dreams, and the freedom to be exactly who we are; just as she was.

We will miss her voice, her movies, her generosity, her one-liners, and the light she brought into the world.

Rest well, Dolly. Thank you for loving us back. We will always love you. ❤️

Theater has long given LGBTQ+ people a place to see ourselves, tell our stories, and find community. That makes what happened at the Wells Theatre feel personal.

After back-to-back storms, severe flooding damaged spaces throughout the historic theater, along with equipment and the set for Virginia Stage Company’s upcoming production of Come From Away.

Virginia Stage Company has shown up for Hampton Roads for generations. Right now, we have an opportunity to show up for them.
