The Norfolk Connecticut Children’s Foundation (NCCF) is pleased to again be offering free summer camperships to the YMCA’s Camp Jewell in Colebrook, CT. (Camperships to other area camps will also be considered).

The YMCA reviews all applications and makes the financial need determination. Families who are found eligible for assistance may sign up for one week of camp at the camp’s reduced rate and will then also be eligible to receive a second week at NO COST. If the family only wants to send their child to attend for one week, the NCCF will cover the cost of that week, once the Camp Director approves the financial need.

Applications and financial assistance forms are available at the Norfolk Library, National Iron Bank, The Berkshire Store, Norfolk Town Hall (Town Clerk’s office), and the Botelle School Office. These forms may also be downloaded from the Camp Jewell website (www.campjewell.org).

If additional information is needed call Don Tobias, President of NCCF (860-480-4125) or Ray Zetey, Executive Director at Camp Jewell (888-412-CAMP).

The NCCF was established in 1985. Its mission is to assure that no Norfolk child be denied a civic, educational, social or cultural enrichment opportunity because of financial need. The NCCF is managed by a six member Board of Directors. For information on how to support the NCCF, please visit our website at norfolkchildren.com or contact the board at [email protected] PO Box 322 Norfolk, CT 06058.

We love seeing our efforts to support the children of Norfolk bearing fruit!

Hooray for curling in Norfolk!!!!

For a curling club located a rural area and in a town of less than 1600 people, it is vital that we get our message out in any way possible. Check out this diagram on the gymnasium wall at Botelle Elementary School. The local gym teacher dedicates the month of February to gym curling and finishes off the month by bringing kids to our club for a field trip to try the real thing. Not only has this increased our own youth program to levels not seen in 20 years but the gym teacher joined this season and curls in our mixed league! Thanks Miss Marquis!

At Swiss Waldkindergartens, or forest kindergartens, children spend all of their school days playing outdoors, no matter the weather. Instead of math or literacy requirements, they focus on the social interaction and emotional well-being found in free play.

The four STEM apps get kids moving in different ways, whether by looking up at the sky, analyzing how their own bodies move, discovering unique objects to photograph, or getting muddy at their local watershed.

"Through experimenting and working together, kids begin to develop skills in creative thinking, math and geometry, and even a bit of geology. And to complete large tasks, they need to plan a strategy, define goals and work together to execute and see the mission through — sort of like having a real job."
