St. Bartholomew was martyred by being flayed alive - ouch! As such, he is the patron saint of those suffering from skin diseases and of anyone who works with leather (the skin of animals). The Church can be quite earthy at times in the patronages She chooses!

God is in the details - always. And here's an incredible detail that often gets misinterpreted. Throughout the centuries, Christians have often taken the idea that "the gates of hell shall not prevail" against the Church as a defensive metaphor. This means that the Church will be assaulted but remain standing.
⁣
But the "gates of hell" themselves are defensive structures. Our Lord is noting that his Church, rather than standing still and being battered by sin, is meant to "go on the offensive" against evil. This is most clearly shown in the Acts of the Apostles, when the disciples go out with great joy and energy to proclaim the Good News. We're asked to do the same at Christ the King Parish!
