Young Professionals of the Hampton Roads Chamber tHRive is a regional young professional’s program of the Hampton Roads Chamber.

It began with a small group of diverse young professionals all driven to provide a platform to promote regional awareness and community development by empowering young professionals to have a voice and invest in the future of our region. tHRive has numerous signature events throughout the year and various monthly events spread across the region. These events will promote an attractive and dynamic community by engaging in the development of the Hampton Roads region, and will focus on areas such as professional development, cultivating relationships, and community engagement.

Cost of living and salary growth rose to the top in our Summer Survey, alongside transportation, connectivity and the social scene.

What does affordability actually feel like for young professionals in Hampton Roads?

In our Summer Survey, the most common rating was a 3 out of 5, with 38.3% of respondents landing right in the middle when comparing the region’s affordability to their salary.

Because attracting and retaining young talent isn’t just about cost of living—it’s also about earning a living.

We put the question to young professionals in our Summer Survey, and 63% chose Hampton Roads as the name that best represents our region.

The name may have been debated over the years, but our young professionals had a pretty clear favorite.

One word stood out in our Summer Survey: underrated.

37% of young professionals chose it to describe Hampton Roads, while others pointed to our sense of community, opportunity and affordability.

There’s a lot to love about this region, now we just have to boldly tell that story.

This summer, we surveyed young professionals across Hampton Roads to hear directly from them about our region—what we’re doing well and what opportunities could help move Hampton Roads forward. Their perspectives will help inform future work through Start in Hampton Roads, a regional talent attraction and retention initiative, and ensure young professionals have a voice in shaping the future of our region.

61.7% of respondents pointed to our military presence, followed by our beaches and coastline.
