Shoot For Good

Shoot For Good What will you be doing on May 18, 2013? Whatever it is, we hope you will have a camera — or camera phone — in hand. Find somebody doing something good. Thanks.

Take a picture of somebody doing good and share it. Shoot For Good is simple: In the 24-hour period on May 18, 2013, grab a camera. Take a picture and share it. Shoot For Good is guided by the basic principal that documentary photography has the ability and responsibility to inspire and educate. Therefore, we created an event that would encourage people to grab a camera and explore volunteerism in

their community. We wanted to inspire local photographers — both amateur and professional — to go out and document the good things that happen every day in their neighborhoods. We created a photo gallery for these pictures and a place to compose a mosaic about remarkable people we call neighbors. The gallery on ShootForGood.org and the photos we will share through social media can be a gathering place for inspiration and motivation. There is a kinship between photography and volunteerism. Practitioners of both seek to reveal and correct injustices while working behind the scene with passion and conviction. Both pursue opportunities to teach and to celebrate the human spirit. Shoot For Good is a labor of love. Like you, we are volunteering our time to do something to make our community better. We welcome you to share your thoughts, comments and suggestions as we grow and evolve. The Shoot For Good team

I'm embarrassed that I've left this page dark for so long. But rest assured, I've been shooting for good. After several years of shooting and editing and translating, I'm thrilled to announce that a documentary film - for which I'm the Director of Photography - has been selected to premier at Academy Award winner Geena Davis's inaugural Bentonville Film Festival. Here is the trailer.

Shoot For Good was dreamed up by Steve Remich, Jennifer Ditona-Garcia, Lisa Villamil and me one night at a bar here in Norfolk, Va. in 2010, in part, as a grand experiment to see how folks around our community interpreted what it means to do good. We challenged photographers of all levels to witness and share those acts of kindness in order to create 24-hour snapshots focused on the things that are right, right in our backyards. Hundreds of shooters met and exceeded those challenges. It was always our intention to expand the project beyond Southeast Virginia.

While some of you jumped the gun just a smidge, beginning tomorrow, the Shoot For Good Facebook Group Page will be an open platform. A gathering place, where people from around the country and around the world can come and visit. Post a photo of someone lending a helping hand. Share an inspirational moment you caught on your smartphone. Comment on the images you enjoy. Ask questions. Or just pop by to relax, catch your breath and lift your spirits seeing that someone somewhere is doing the right thing and someone equally as kind and generous thought to shoot it and share with the rest of us.

Help us kick the Group Page off in style. Keep your peepers peeled tomorrow, Shoot For Good and share it with us here and on Instagram and/or Twitter. And then, come back. As often as you'd like. Starting tomorrow, the day kindness comes into focus is the day we steal a bit of the spotlight from all the bad news we suffer through daily and shine the light on the real role models among us.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank each and every one of you who has supported Shoot For Good these past few years. You are absolutely the reason why the project has been such a success. Sure, SFG is meant to be portal through which we celebrate unsung heroes. A big pointer finger recognizing the good deeds done by our neighbors. But, you know what they say about pointing. Three fingers point back. So for me, SFG is as much a celebration of you. Your vision, your willingness to be a witness and your generosity in sharing your talents. Now let's do this!!
