We’re not really the joining type.
But we’ve officially put our name on the Folk Union Charter.
People tend to think of “folk” as something dusty—a collection of rules for people who lived a hundred years ago or a museum exhibit behind glass. But for us, folk is the dirt under our fingernails right now. It’s the zines we trade, the stories we tell in the back of bars, and the quiet, stubborn way we hold each other up when the world feels indifferent.
Folk is the Public Sphere. It belongs to all of us, or it belongs to no one.
By signing this Charter, we are committing to a culture that is open, fair, and free of gatekeepers. We’re rejecting the idea that tradition is something used to divide people or something that can be bought and sold for a profit. We’re here to protect the shared inheritance of our stories and our land.
This isn’t just about the past; it’s about the present. It’s about making sure that when we gather, we’re building something thoughtful, ethical, and imaginative. It’s about treating our collaborators with respect and keeping the doors wide open for anyone who wants to pick up a pen and add their voice to the pile.
Unite and Unite! The light is coming back, and we’ve got work to do.
