YOUR SAFETY MATTERS AT LASEV!

Members of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly bisexual people and transgender individuals, are significantly more likely to experience intimate partner or domestic violence in their lifetime. Survivors may feel that the legal system is too complex or stacked against them, but we want you to know that we are here for you! The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia is a nonprofit law firm with a goal of making justice accessible for all. We support low-income Virginians of all identities in civil matters such as obtaining protective orders, family law, and housing matters, including eviction defense.

In addition, we will be reposting one of our most popular legal education series next week! Deputy Director Melissa Bonfiglio will walk you through the process of obtaining a protective order and the types of protective orders in Virginia. Follow our socials for these and other quick legal education videos to help empower you with accurate and meaningful information!

If you are experiencing domestic violence and need legal support, please call our locally staffed Community Support Team at 757-827-5078 or apply online through www.laseva.org.

Statistics in this post are based on research done by the HRC.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to Lindsey McCarty Realtor for the generous work she has done for our client! Our client was on the verge of losing her home to property tax foreclosure, a process that would have seen her lose all the equity in her home. In situations of tax foreclosure, many homes are sold for only the value of the tax debt. Lindsey stepped in with expertise and empathy, spending hours finding the right solution for our client and walking her through this complicated process. We could not be more grateful for Lindsey and her team at Long & Foster for providing such wonderful care and consideration for our client!

If you are interested in working with Lindsey, here's where you can find her!

Housing insecurity is a major concern for many members of the LGBTQ+ community. While lack of affordable housing is an issue affecting everyone, LGBTQ+ individuals and families face documented, additional discrimination and harassment in housing spaces. Studies by the Center for American Progress and the Trevor Project show that bisexual women, transgender individuals and young adults face the highest levels of housing insecurity, including unsheltered homelessness.

The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia is a nonprofit law firm providing FREE legal services for low-income Virginians in civil matters, including eviction defense, housing record expungements and collections matters. To apply for services, call our locally staffed Community Support Team at 757-827-5078.

"Tell the Court I love my wife, and it is just unfair that I can't live with her in Virginia." - Richard Loving

Today is the 59th anniversary of the Loving v. Virginia decision, which held that bans on in*******al marriage violate the Equal Protection and Due Process clauses of the 14th Amendment. This landmark civil rights decision was later held as precedent for Obergefell v. Hodges and the removal of restrictions on same-sex marriage.

The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia serves humanity - no matter who you are, how you express yourself or who you love. It is part of our daily commitment to care for the people of Hampton Roads. We are proud to celebrate Loving Day during this Pride Month!

If you or your family have been the victims of discrimination in housing or employment or need assistance with other civil matters, please reach out to our Community Support Team at 757-827-5078. We provide FREE legal assistance to low-income Virginians.

Today, at the NRHA Board of Commissioners meeting, our Deputy Director and Director of Litigation Melissa Bonfiglio addressed the ongoing maintenance crisis in the Young Terrace and Calvert Square communities. In response to a recent FOIA request, NRHA disclosed that in the span of 3.5 years, there were over 1,600 reports of leaks and over 4,700 instances of plumbing problems in these two communities. The constant drip of water creates a damaging cycle of poorly performed maintenance and reoccurring mold growth. The residents of these units, including seniors, children and people with disabilities, are left physically ill because of the conditions in their homes.

The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia is a nonprofit law firm providing FREE legal services to low-income Virginians in civil matters. We are not affiliated with NRHA. We have assisted numerous NRHA residents with their matters related to poor maintenance, disability discrimination, and eviction prevention. If you are an NRHA resident and are experiencing issues with your unit or property manager, please call us at 757-827-5078 to start an application.

For residents of Young Terrace or Calvert Square, please call your community liaison:
Young Terrace: Megan Marmottin 757-648-1377 or [email protected]
Calvert Square: Anitra Howard 757-648-1381 or [email protected]

We're backstage at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, talking with one of our clients about her journey with Legal Aid! Jasmine has been working with Legal Aid since 2022 on issues from housing to custody to special education matters for her children. She and her children have become part of the LASEV family over the years and we were excited to introduce her to Cooper Hurley and to our donors and volunteers. Her interview with the team at CHIL will be shared on our social media in the coming weeks.

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia, Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has launched a nine month fundraising effort, $160K for 60 Years of Equal Justice, running from April 1 through December 31, 2026. The goal is simple but ambitious: raise $160,000 to honor six decades of service and help ensure Legal Aid can continue its mission for generations to come.

Your support is the key to LASEV's goal of holistic care for every client! You can join us today by visiting our website at www.laseva.org/60th-anniversary and making a monthly or one-time donation!
