LASEV SPEAKS OUT! SIGNIFICANT MOLD AT YOUNG TERRACE!

Deputy Director and Director of Litigation Melissa Bonfiglio spoke at the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners meeting on August 13th about the significant mold and water damage issues facing our clients in Young Terrace. The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia has serious concerns about the quality of the mold testing and remediation being done by NRHA, so much so that we have hired our own mold expert to conduct testing in one of our client’s units. We believe that the concerns of residents regarding mold and water damage are being downplayed by the Authority and that NRHA is trying to shift blame for the conditions onto residents.

The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia is a nonprofit law firm providing FREE legal services for low-income Virginians in civil matters including housing, family law, collections and more. We are committed to working with residents of Young Terrace and Calvert Square during the “redevelopment” of the St. Paul’s neighborhood. If you are NRHA resident with mold or water damage in your unit, please call our locally staffed Community Support Team at 757-827-5078 to start an application with our program.

Young Terrace Residents can call their Community Liaison, Megan Marmottin, at 757-648-1377 for faster service.
Calvert Square Residents can call their Community Liaison, Anitra Howard, at 757-627-5423 Ext. 176 for faster service.

SUCCESS STORIES FROM LEGAL AID!

Virginia tenants have a right to a home that is safe and habitable. Attorneys at Legal Aid are available to provide advice and representation to low-income Virginians struggling with poor conditions in their unit. Staff Attorney Caleb McClain recently represented a client who had been forced out of her unit and into a hotel due to a worsening sewer backup in her home. Her landlord was trying to evict her for nonpayment of rent, despite the fact that she had been unable to live in her unit. With Caleb's help and support, our client was able to win in court where the judge held that she was not responsible for June's rent.

SUCCESS STORIES FROM LEGAL AID!

The attorneys and staff at Legal Aid are committed to providing quality legal services to low income Virginians who would otherwise be forced to represent themselves in complicated legal matters. Our client, a disabled senior, was forced from his home when his landlord passed away and the landlord's daughter changed the locks. Our client was forced to live in his car and lost nearly all of his possessions. The new owner even filed to evict our client, despite having already locked him out of the unit. Staff Attorney Ronnie Kenley represented our client in an unlawful exclusion case and the judge awarded over $21,000 in total damages.
