The Armed Services YMCA enhances the lives of military members and their families in spirit, mind, and body through programs relevant to the unique challenges of military life. Our focus is to provide needed programs and services for single or married junior enlisted personnel and their family members. At the Armed Services YMCA Child Development Centers, learning happens through meaningful experiences, exploration, play, and strong relationships. 💙

Our Early Learning Matters (ELM) curriculum provides research-informed learning experiences designed to support the development of the whole child. Through engaging, age-appropriate activities, children build important skills in:

At the Armed Services YMCA Child Development Center in Norfolk, family-style dining is an important part of every child's day.

Children gather around the table with their teachers to share a meal, practice serving themselves, make healthy food choices, and enjoy meaningful conversations with friends. These everyday moments help build independence, confidence, social skills, language development, and healthy eating habits that last a lifetime.

🎓💙 From Tiny Steps to Big Dreams 💙🎓

It's hard to believe that the little hands we once helped hold crayons are now holding preschool diplomas. ❤️

Today we celebrate our incredible preschool graduates as they take one of the biggest steps of their young lives—heading off to Kindergarten! We've watched them grow from curious little learners into confident, kind, creative, and capable children who are ready for their next adventure.

There have been first friendships, first letters, first science discoveries, countless stories, laughter, and so many proud moments along the way. While our hearts are a little bittersweet as we say goodbye, they are also overflowing with pride.

To our graduates: Never stop asking questions, exploring the world around you, and believing in yourself. We know you are going to do amazing things!

We’ve been very busy in Norfolk! Last week, we hosted a Hiring Our Heroes event and also held an interactive staff training focused on ensuring our teachers have the tools, resources, and support they need to be successful in the classroom.

We are also currently looking for parent volunteers to join our Parent Board. Our first meeting was held last month, and we are excited to continue building strong family partnerships. If you are interested in getting involved, please see Jeannie Zarate to sign up.

The past two months have been filled with special moments, meaningful celebrations, and unforgettable memories for our military children and the incredible team that supports them every day.

💜 During the Month of the Military Child, we celebrated the strength, resilience, and sacrifices of our military-connected children with special activities, purple pride, and plenty of opportunities to recognize what makes them so extraordinary.

🍎 We also took time to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, honoring the dedicated educators who create nurturing environments, inspire curiosity, and make a lasting impact on every child who walks through our doors. Their passion and commitment help our military families thrive.

From hands-on learning experiences and creative projects to outdoor adventures, new friendships, and developmental milestones, our classrooms have been buzzing with excitement and growth!
