Today, one of our Mosaic Academy (Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center) students stepped onto the stage alone with nothing but a steelpan, a backing track, and the preparation to succeed. Moments like these are where confidence grows, wings spread, and young musicians discover just how far they can fly.

As MacArthur Center prepares to close, Mosaic Steel Orchestra pauses with gratitude.

For us, this space was more than a mall. It was a home for rehearsals, lessons, performances, friendships, and countless moments of creativity. Students grew here. Families gathered here. Music filled the halls here.

Now, as one chapter closes, another begins. Mosaic Steel Orchestra is preparing to continue its mission in Norfolk’s Park Place community, bringing creativity, music, and opportunity to a neighborhood where we believe our work can make a meaningful impact.

We are grateful for where we have been and excited for where we are going.

The MacArthur Center mall is set to close for good on Saturday. The mall, once a regional gem, has sat mostly empty for several years. The remaining tenants have until July 14 to be fully moved out.

Once the mall is empty, the city of Norfolk will begin the next steps toward redevelopment, including pre-demolition planning later this year. The city says the goal is to replace the aging mall with a mixed-use district that includes housing, hotels, street-level retail and new street connections.
