Virginia Queer Film Festival

Virginia Queer Film Festival The 3rd Annual Virginia Q***r Film Festival is in September 2025, in Norfolk, VA. VAQFF.org for more. Donate at gofund.me/4bdaa5dc

The Virginia Q***r Film Festival provides access to films by, for, and about le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, and q***r (LGBTQ+) people and their families, and a forum for LGBTQ+ BIPOC filmmakers to share and discuss their work with audiences. Our inaugural film festival is June 14-16, 2023 on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. It is the first of its kind in Virginia and one

of only a handful of LGBTQ+ film festivals in the American South. Our vision is to elevate the spectrum of q***r stories to educate, entertain, and build deeper acceptance and understanding of the Southern q***r experience. While we accept submissions from all filmmakers, our mission is to foster local and regional community engagement by showcasing q***r film programming, educational experiences, and social dialogue with a focus on Virginia and Southern voices. Submissions for our 2023 open December 1 on our Film Freeway page filmfreeway.com/VirginiaQ***rFilmFestival)

We screened Sofia Coppola's new film Fairyland on Tuesday night and it was a revelation. Based on Alysia Abbott's memoir Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father, the film follows father and daughter to early 70s San Francisco after her mother dies.

Steve's bohemian lifestyle clashes with expectations of being a parent from both the outside world and Alysia herself, who occasionally wishes for less of the independence her father gives her. Their bonds and duty to each other are tested in painful and sudden ways.

Years later, as an adult she discovers a world of artists and writers through her father, but also the AIDS crisis when people around her contract the virus to which her father also falls victim.

98% Rotten Tomatoes Fresh. IMHO it'll be an Oscar contender.
