Weekly Devotion
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us. (Rom. 5:1)
Access: How many passwords do you use? I’ve lost track of how many I’ve used over the years. To name a couple: I have one password that allows me to use my debit card. Another password allows me to access the online edition of the Omaha World Herald. There are many more that I have a hard time keeping straight! I used to keep my passwords on a post it note under the keyboard of my computer. That’s not a good strategy, and you won’t find them there anymore.
Our passwords allow us to access vital information. Without my password, I can’t access the funds in my checking account. Thank goodness we don’t need a password to access our faith. St. Paul writes, “We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.”
And as we reflect on the celebration of Pentecost which we recently observed, “God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.” It’s like the Holy Spirit is our heavenly password. Maybe not the best analogy, but I’m grateful that the Holy Spirit—through water and the Word—makes our “peace with God” possible.
We thank and praise You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
