Every tree planted today changes our tomorrow…

Last week the Norfolk Master Gardeners held their Let’s Plant A Tree Free Tree Giveaway on the Southside of Norfolk, and it was a powerful reminder of what community stewardship looks like in action.

We’re grateful to be part of a group that understands the importance of caring for our environment and investing in the health of our neighborhoods.

Every tree that goes out into the community brings shade, improved air quality, and meaningful heat reduction — all critical in urban settings where these benefits matter most. Each planting strengthens the resilience, beauty, and long-term health of our community.

We’re proud of this work and of every resident who took home a tree to make a difference where they live.

An Apple A Day…

The Fall season is my favorite. One of my favorite memories from the season was when I wandered through the apple orchards in Virginia — rows of trees stretching as far as the eye could see, leaves shifting into fiery colors, and that golden autumn sky wrapping everything in a glow. It was a simple moment, but it reminded me how easy it is to forget the beauty of nature when we’re surrounded by it every day.
This year, I’m looking forward to returning to the orchards and exploring how we can have more orchards around Norfolk and Hampton Roads.

Because a tree is wonderful, but an edible tree? That’s truly the fruit of life.

Knowledge + Access = Power

We have our seed libraries up thanks to the Serve The City team. We will be putting in seedlings and environmental information for the community. This will be a place to get seeds, leave seeds, gain knowledge and grow together. Food sovereignty is not about talking but about action. Our hope is that every step heads us in the direction of making sure our beloved community can build a sustainability plan for themselves, their families and the surrounding community together.

A huge thank you to for your donation of the libraries!

Together is the only way.

Let’s Grow Together

Every Friday morning, we open the gates to Prosperous Gardens for our Grow Together Open Gardening Days—and you’re invited. From 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM, we gather at our Berkley garden sites to dig in, connect, and grow real food for our community.

Whether you’ve never picked up a trowel or you’ve been gardening for years, there’s a place for you in our soil. Volunteers help us tend the land, harvest produce, and learn about sustainable growing practices—all while supporting K.U.S.P.’s mission to increase emergency food access and preparedness in underserved neighborhoods.

This is more than gardening. It’s connection, healing, community care, and collective power.

Bring a friend, meet your neighbors, and be part of growing something meaningful.

From Seed to Harvest…

The excitement in the garden was real as the kids from the Berkley Community Center harvested their very own broccoli crops. Seeing them light up as they pulled fresh broccoli from the soil is exactly why we do this work. They are learning firsthand that food does not just come from the store—it comes from the earth, their hands, and their dedication.

Through growing their own produce, these young farmers are discovering the power of agriculture, the importance of healthy eating, and the joy of harvesting what they worked so hard to nurture. Even better, they are excited to take their broccoli home and enjoy a meal made from something they grew themselves.

This is more than just a garden—it is a classroom, a community, and a movement toward food sovereignty.
