Norfolk DEVO

Norfolk DEVO Norfolk DEVO (short for development) is a skills based developmental mountain biking program for kids ages 5-18

Norfolk DEVO offers a four-week program to develop kids (of all abilities) in the exciting sport of mountain biking. Norfolk DEVO curriculum is organized into a building block style program, starting with basic bicycle handling skills and gradually working up to advanced off- road techniques. Norfolk DEVO riders are initially organized by age. Later, the riders will be evaluated and rearranged int

o groups based on skill and progression. Norfolk DEVO conducts two-hour practice sessions each Monday night at Skyview Lake and Maskenthine Lake. Norfolk DEVO also hosts “All- DEVO” rides throughout the program, where families are invited to join the kids on the trails. This is a great opportunity for kids to show off their new skills, and maybe even teach mom or dad something new!

Thanks to everyone for donating to our league fundraiser in years past. There is just 4 days left of our annual rally up fundraiser. This year’s top prize is a Trek Supercaliber 9.8 XT cross country racing mountain bike.
Half of the money received donated in our teams name goes directly back to our team and if we’re able to hit our fundraiser goal that increases to 60%!!!
Thank you so much for helping our team and our league. You make it possible for us to keep this wonderful team going!

Our 2022 DEVO program wrapped up Monday night and we’re all a little sad to see the eager young faces go. This year was a lot of fun and had several new faces. Lots of progress from everyone even the ones we thought we might never get through to. It is amazing how much their brains retain even when we think they aren’t listening or paying attention. I am once again thrilled and amazed at the abilities and achievements of these young athletes.
To top it off we had an 8 year old girl who is a complete and utter natural at about everything she does apparently. Addison surprised us all when at our try it out event she did 10 laps on the little DEVO short course. She now has completed nearly a full 7 mile lap riding with dad. She excels at all the skills we throw at her.
Last Thursday we did a mixed practice with NICA kids and since she already showed such progress we put her and another DEVO boy with the NICA kids to play some games. All the kids paired up and she and her teammate either won or got second place in every game they played! The boys couldn’t believe it and ribbed each other a bit for getting beat by an 8 year old lol. Amazing! We’re all really hopeful for this awesome little human, she will be good at whatever she does. We will be lucky if she chooses the bike and let’s us come along for the journey. She already demonstrates the skill levels necessary for NICA and I can only imagine how far she can go. She and her parents were naturally disappointed to know that she has a few years before she’s eligible for NICA. Hopefully we’re able to keep her engaged and interested in the meantime 🤞

Had our first practice of the season Wednesday evening and it was a hoot! Lots of new faces showed and we ran through some skills, played games on bikes and we were able to get out for a trail ride too. We postponed Monday in hopes for rideable trails Wednesday and the weather actually cooperated and let us do just that! Good times and smiles galore. We had a great time and look forward to seeing the full group on Monday! It’s gonna be hot so make sure the kiddos are hydrated before coming out and have some way to get water while they are here please. We can accommodate a few if need be but if you can please plan ahead.
See you next week!!!

With all the rain yesterday the trail is going to be too muddy to ride tonight. We are postponing tonight’s practice to Wednesday at 6-8 pm hoping that we’ll get lucky and be able to ride some dirt trails. If it’s still too wet we’ll still have our practice and play bike games and probably do some riding on the grass trails down by the lake to make the best of it. See you Wednesday!!!

We had a nice turnout for our Try Mountain Biking event at Maskenthine Lake and Rec on Saturday. Smiles all around for our coaches and kids as they learned some basic bike handling skills, played games on bikes, and went for group trail rides. We are looking forward to improving on our first season and getting more kids on bikes!

Our final night of DEVO was last Monday and smiles were abundant! Sad to see it end so soon and wish we had more time to ride with the rad riders that came out for our first season.
Watching the progression and hearing the feedback and thank you’s really made the experience worth the work to get this off the ground.
Thanks to all the parents for putting forth the money, effort, car rides and wait time to make us able to have a class to teach.
Thanks to all the coaches for chipping in all the ways that you have(way to many to list). Everyone really pitched in and I’m very lucky to have such an awesome team to work with.
Please stay tuned as we plan to improve and grow the program in the future. In order to grow we will need more volunteers.
If you know anyone that would like to help in some aspect (coaches and volunteers need not be experienced riders or even riders at all necessarily) please have them contact us!
