Our 5th class of Fellows have arrived in Hampton Roads! We are excited to welcome Flutist Rafael Méndez, Violinist Manuel Mendes, and Cellist Miguel Fuentes to the VSO as a part of the VSO Fellowship Program: Professional Development for Early-Career, Underrepresented Musicians.

Did you know this program is one of only 20 across the country dedicated to nurturing and developing emerging musicians from underrepresented backgrounds? It is an extension of the VSO’s continued efforts to advance the goal of increased diversity of orchestral musicians nationwide.

The program’s fifth season is funded by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, the Goode Family Foundation, and an Old Dominion University grant through the state of Virginia. Our gratitude knows no bounds to all those who help us provide this program to musicians across the nation.

Previous fellows have accepted positions and additional fellowships at numerous organizations, including the Philharmonic Orchestra of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, The Orchestra Now, New World Symphony, and Billings Symphony. The third class of fellows were also highlighted in the 2025 WHRO Documentary, Virginia Symphony Orchestra Fellows: Orchestrating Change, currently streaming on PBS and WHRO+.

This thank-you card came from a homeschool group that recently joined an open rehearsal with the orchestra. The students got to watch a live performance up close, see how a rehearsal actually works, and ask questions about the instruments afterward. Notes like this are a great reminder of how meaningful these experiences can be for young audiences.
