Steve has never fully integrated back into his herd after his month-long illness. But it’s clear that he has a very special bond with Atticus. Atticus often follows Steve around, gently rubbing his nose all over his body, nuzzling his neck. There’s a softness to it, not like the typical displays of dominance goats can show. It’s wonderful to see the two biggest guys have these tender moments.

This is such a goat move - Rafael is always making a bed in his food. The sheep he lives with now don’t really appreciate it but they’re just too sweet and gentle to tell him. So he basically gets whatever he wants. (Hence that sly little smile) 🤍

Teak was feeling pretty fancy the other day in his hay collar. 🤎 He loves to dive in before I even get the hay in the feeders. It’s been amazing to watch this little sickly baby grow up to be such a chunky strong guy. [swipe to see the sweetest, most adorable lamb you’ve ever seen!]

Sheep truly have hearts of gold. I’m not sure if it’s her mothering instinct or just her sheep nature, but Claudia always knows when someone could use a pick-me-up. After I basically collapsed from exhaustion cleaning out their house, she came over, pressed her head into me, and laid by my side until I was ready to get up again. 🤍 Given the snow storm in the forecast tonight (on top of the swamp we already have from days of rain), I think I’ll need lots more of her hugs this week.

It’s unreal that over two weeks after the storm, the snow is still rock-hard and everyone is walking on top of it. The wind this past weekend was dangerously strong and cold.

Finally the sun is out and the temps are going up - nearly 50° forecasted for today! Steve’s smile says it all… we’re all ready for spring to arrive.

Savannah has been having the best time in the snow. I figured it would slow her down, make her want to stay wrapped up in bed, but she has been friskier than ever. She flies across the top of the snow and climbs to the tops of the trees. She still comes with us to make the rounds as we do chores. We’re still trying to entice her into the house at night but she has been perfectly content in her little heated house in the garage. 🖤🧡

9 days after the storm and we’re still able to walk on top of the snow. This has actually been a blessing though - it’s been nice sliding the water buckets and wheelbarrow across the ice. All the residents venture out as well and have gotten pretty good at navigating it all. Today may warm up though, so we’ll be bracing for the huge mess all of this is going to make. SO much clean up in our future…

One week after the storm and the snow and ice hasn’t budged a bit. The wind chill temps have been near zero every night so everything is rock hard. We’ve been closing the sheep in at night to be sure no one gets left out. They look forward to the hot water we bring them every morning. Normally Luna keeps her distance from us, but she’s been enjoying this routine so much that she comes right up to us to get the first sip. 🤍

After an absolutely frigid night, the sun was a welcome sight today. It gave the illusion of warmth even though the foot of snow we got is now a block of solid ice. The buns decided they were ready to explore the snow. Somehow their little den opening was uncovered so they hung out underground for a bit. 🩶🖤

We want to give a huge shout out to some amazing supporters who came through for us, donating funds to restock all our bedding. THANK YOU for helping our residents stay warm and dry. We love you all!

It’s no news that we’ve been bracing for a major winter storm today. Originally the forecast said 24”. Although we ended up with a lot less than that, it turned out to be all tiny pellets of ice. And now that the snowfall is done, we have a week ahead of us with temps at and below zero. Everything on the ground will be rock solid tomorrow- and it’s not going anywhere any time soon.

The sheep got quite the surprise this morning when we opened their house to all this white. They all ran out thinking it’d be fine, but immediately turned back around and went inside for the rest of the day. I don’t blame them!

We made it through the day, but I’m worried that the worst is yet to come with the frigid temps. Once we can actually get back on the road (hopefully by the end of the week), we’ll need to completely restock bedding. We don’t ask very often, but would really appreciate any amount of donation to help us recover. [our Links are in our bio]

Stay safe and warm!! 🖤🤍

I don’t think it’s possible to ever say thank you enough to all of our amazing sponsors. The monthly donations they make to support their special resident(s) keep us afloat. We don’t run big fundraisers (we’re a tiny sanctuary compared to most) so our sponsors cover ALL of our core costs: food, bedding, vet care, and everything our residents need to stay happy and healthy.

One of our favorite parts of sponsorship is getting to meet these supporters in person. This fall, Apple’s sponsor, Dee, came to visit and spend some quality time with Apple and her family. It was such a joy to connect face-to-face, make plans for more visits this spring, and even receive an incredibly thoughtful treat delivery for both the residents and the humans here. Thank you, Dee, for all your support. We truly couldn’t do this without you.
