🤎🤍Mabel update: Once her vet got her under anesthesia, he was able to examine the mass more closely. Great news is that it appears to be localized; her lymph nodes are unaffected. Bad news is that he was concerned there wouldn’t be enough skin to keep the incision closed.

So we had two options: 1) do the surgery and hope it stays closed, but given the high heat of summer and flies, there’d be a risk of infection. 2) try chemotherapy meds for a bit to try to reduce the size before surgery, but if that doesn’t work and it gets bigger, surgery may not be an option.

We decided to go with option 2. She got one injection at the clinic and we’re applying meds every day for a week. We’re monitoring very closely for any signs of growth. If that happens, she’ll immediately go in for surgery. If it shrinks, we’ll give it a couple of weeks and reassess when to remove the mass.

The AC in our minivan-turned-animal-transport-vehicle isn’t working, so Mabel got limo service to her surgery today. 🤍 She seemed calm and relaxed when I dropped her off; I think she knows everyone is here to help her. Her vet will call us with an update when she is out and awake. Stay tuned.

Unfortunately, we’re facing another emergency. We noticed a small wound on Mabel that wasn’t healing, and then, seemingly overnight, it grew significantly. Based on our experience with Dolly years ago, we’re confident it’s carcinoma.

Mabel is scheduled for surgery tomorrow to remove the mass. We’re hopeful it hasn’t spread too deeply and that her vet will be able to remove it completely.

Please keep Mabel in your thoughts and send her all the strength and love for a safe surgery and a smooth recovery. 🤎🤍

It is with heavy hearts that we share that we had to say goodbye to Matilda. We already miss her more than we can put into words.

She was deeply loved and cared for, and while we’re thankful she’s no longer struggling, our farm feels much quieter without her. Lots of gratitude for her long-time sponsor, Jen. Thank you for helping us care for her as long as we could.

As I mentioned yesterday, Romeo wasn’t our only emergency this past week. We got home from the vet with him at 2am and less than eight hours later, we were headed back, this time with Matilda.

She’s been struggling to keep weight on, but we still haven’t found the cause. We’ve done extensive bloodwork, dewormers, vitamins and supplements, tried different types and suppliers of hay, pellets, and more, but we haven’t seen any significant improvement. The extreme heat this past week was especially hard on her.

The other day we noticed she was anemic, so Billie went along with her to the vet in case she needed a blood transfusion (thankfully, she didn’t). Her vet was also pretty adamant that she’s much older than we thought, well over 10 years old. Her teeth are very worn, and she’s missing several, so he floated them in case that’s been contributing to the problem.

Matilda and Billie ended up spending the night for monitoring. By the next morning, Matilda had perked up. She was eating and drinking well and walking around like nothing had happened. Since coming home, she’s had ups and downs. The good news is that she’s no longer anemic and has a fantastic appetite. The bad news is that once she lies down, she can’t always get herself back up without help. We added several new cameras to the sheep yard so we can keep a close eye on her.

She’s been hanging out with Romeo, enjoying all the special treatment. Hopefully, the cooler temperatures this week will finally give her body a chance to rest and recover a bit. Matilda could use some extra love and well wishes too. 🖤🤎

Look who I found up this morning! The flock was very noisily walking out to the pasture when I came out this morning and this guy was standing in the doorway talking back to them. Romeo must be feeling so much better! He even took a few steps over to the hay feeder. He’s resting again now, but I think we’ve finally turned the corner. 🖤🤍

This week has been somewhat of a nightmare. Just when we were bracing for the heat dome to hit us, we had two emergencies (everyone is stable for now). First we noticed that Romeo wasn’t being his gregarious self. Rather than pushing to the front to get all the attention, he was hanging back, walking slow; understandable given the temps. And then a couple of days later, he just didn’t get up.

We rushed him to the vet in the middle of the night… diagnosis: listeria. Two years ago we almost lost Steve to this so we knew what we were up against. But this time during ridiculously dangerous heat. We have to check on him constantly to keep him clean, cool, and sprayed down to keep the flies away. No easy task when he weighs over 200lbs!

So let’s jump to the good news: it’s been slow-progressing and the meds are working well so he’s in much better shape than Steve was. He can’t stand on his own, but he’s eating and drinking great, chewing cud, all the plumbing is working well. We’ve been lifting him with straps to get some exercise and today he took a few steps on his own! The heat is going to break tonight so we’re looking forward to the relief we’ll all feel soon. Please send Romeo all the love and encouragement to keep hanging in there. 🖤🤍

I’m running out of ways to describe how beautiful Winter is. She’s a shiny black oil slick with gems for eyes. Her nose screams royalty.Her ears are so expressive and change based on her mood. She’s the perfect mix of squishy lovebug and assertive herd queen. 🖤
