Memorial Day, originally called "Decoration Day," was first established by General John Logan, a Civil War Veteran who was serving as Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. The day was set aside to decorate the graves of veterans who died while fighting for their country. In addition to his military service, Logan was also an active Freemason. Bro. Logan was raised in Mitchell Lodge No. 85 of Pinckneyville, IL and affiliated with Benton Lodge No. 64 in 1851. He received his 32nd Degree in Oriental Consistory, in Chicago, IL, in 1880. He also was exalted in Washington Chapter No. 43, Royal Arch Masons, Chicago, IL, in September of 1885 as well as being knighted in Chevalier Bayard Commandery No. 52, Knights Templar, Chicago, IL, in December of 1885. On September 15, 1886, he was elected to receive the 33rd Degree, but died on December 26, 1886 before it could be conferred.

Today we honor and remember Jesus “Chuy” Cordova on the anniversary of his ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Chuy served his community with courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. His dedication to duty and the people he served will never be forgotten.

We pause to reflect on his life, his service, and the legacy he leaves behind. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who had the honor of serving alongside him.

Your courage will never be forgotten. Your sacrifice will never be in vain.

On this day in history April 26, 1872 William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody became one of only four civilian scouts awarded the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor during the Indian Wars for valor in action. Though later removed from the rolls in 1917, his honor was officially restored in 1989 by the Army Board for Correction of Military Records.

What many may not know is that Buffalo Bill was also a devoted Freemason. He was initiated into Platte Valley Lodge No. 32 on March 5, 1870, and raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on April 2, 1870. He later continued his Masonic journey through the York Rite, becoming a Knight Templar in 1889, and received the 32° in the Scottish Rite in 1894.

A reminder that men of courage, service, and character have long found fellowship within the Craft.
