What We Do

Monthly Meetings - Club members learn about all aspects of nature through presentations by members or guests at the club’s monthly meetings. Meetings are typically the 4th Thursday of the month at the Blatchley Clubhouse. Meetings can include club business as well as nature observations as shared by members and their guests. Field Studies - Typically led by a club member, the field studies provide an opportunity for hands on study of a selected nature topic. We utilize the Blatchley Sanctuary as our field of study for these investigations. Field Trips - During the year, club members organize trips to other locations locally or within a few hours drive. We have experienced the flight of Whooping Cranes and observed herds of Elk as examples of these trips. Service - Club members have participated the past several years in the White River Cleanup which occurs annually in September. With the Blatchley sanctuary located along the White river this has become a natural extension of the club’s activities.

Blatchley rocks!!!

The southwest retaining wall is 95% complete after today's work session!!! Some SERIOUSLY big rocks selected by head "rock wrangler" Mike Culy to get this together!!!

The work continues...and would be better if the mosquitoes would go away!!!

It's time for the October update on "Project Blatchley Backyard"!!! The crew continues to find time and energy (for short spurts, anyway) as the work moves forward on the conversion of our activity area! While the timetable doesn't favor completion by our original Oct. 10 "deadline" (that's the Fall Hike and Bonfire event!!), we have been putting in the time...with some incredible results!!

As our cost cutting plan has us using "beauty rocks" instead of manufactured block for our retention walls, you will hopefully note some new additions to the property!! Rocks at the entry to the main trail area, partial formation of main retaining walls (SE and SW corners of the building), and recently added some more "decorative" rock to the NW and NE corners of the clubhouse!! (See pix!)

We typically work on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 9-12, so stop in and check things out...or lend a hand!! Plenty of dirt, rocks, and shoveling to go around!!

Time for another Blatchley "Backyard" update!!

Now that the dust has settled from the amazing Bobcat work of our friend, Trace, it was time to move into our next phase of the project!!! This time, drainage lines were the focus!!

On Tuesday, the "crew" got together to continue the finer details of prepping the back of the clubhouse property for our upcoming paver patio installation!! Areas near the building were cleaned up, some additional leveling was done, and decisions were made to redo drainage out of the building (basement drain) and downspout water movement!! And, that meant...bring in the heavy equipment!

A trencher was rented and brought in to the mix, digging nearly 100 feet of trench areas for new piping!! Wow, what an experience that was!! But, it sure saved our crew (7-8 "old guys") from hand digging those for the new piping!!

3 hours of trenching made it possible for us to put in new exit pipes (green) for the basement line (which was a series of broken clay pipes, all filled with dirt), and 2 flexible drainage pipes (black) to remove rainwater from the roof!! Each line was 30+ feet long!!

All pipes now set, backfilled, and covered!!! Given a few days to settle (maybe with a little rain), we'll be ready to begin the next phase...building of the "beauty rock" retaining wall!! And, maybe a start on the new tiered walkway on the west side of the building!

Taking care of business!!! Blatchley members have been working since early summer on a rather ambitious project!! The board and members of the club have begun a "renovation" of the clubhouse backyard as a major event for 2026!!

After removing the "party deck" and doing some general cleanup, members of the Building and Grounds committee have started the backyard transformation from "open ground" (with a fire pit) to what will eventually be a paver patio, new fire pit, tiered walkway on the westside of the building, and taking the "empty lot" and turning it into an activity area to be used for member events!!!

Work has been completed on repiping the septic system (no work done in the 61 years of the clubhouse!), adding septic risers (those green things) for easier access to the septic tank, and recent grading and excavation of the back zone for a more versatile activity area!! Thanks, Trace, for your Bobcat skills!!

Great day for the annual Wildflower Walk!

Got a chance to take a stroll around the sanctuary today...checking out the current status of wildflowers as we approach our upcoming "Late Bloomers" Wildflower Walk...Saturday, April 25, 1:00-5:00 pm!!

While many of the blossoms from last weekend are gone, we have some new ones on hand for round 2 of our walk! And, as many of us know, sometimes its not only about the "flowers", but about the ephemeral plants that grace our property each year!!

Here are some of the beauties I saw today...

1. Large Flowered Trillium
2. Star Chickweed
3. Mayapple
4. Jack in the Pulpit (with binoculars for scaling)...this is a
HUGE specimen!!
