When a fire fighter calls a Mayday, every second matters.

Last week, members of Local 4416 and Carmel Professional Firefighters Local 4444 trained with retired FDNY Chief Tom Richardson on how to manage a firefighter Mayday.

Richardson spent 42 years with the FDNY, retiring as Chief of Department in 2023. He also served as Chief of Fire Operations, overseeing more than 11,000 firefighters and fire officers.

His “Commanding the Chaos” lecture focused on the skills needed to manage a firefighter emergency, make good decisions under pressure and help bring our members home safely.

The training was hosted by the Carmel Fire Department, Fishers Fire Department, Noblesville Fire Department and Westfield Fire Department.

October 4 through 10 is National Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme focuses on simple, everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep our homes and communities safer.

Rechargeable devices are part of everyday life. Cell phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes, scooters and many other devices rely on lithium-ion batteries.

These batteries are generally safe when used properly, but damaged batteries and improper charging can create a serious fire risk. Taking a few simple precautions when charging your devices can help prevent fires and keep your family safe.

Fire Prevention Week is observed each October in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which caused widespread destruction and helped change the way we think about fire safety and prevention.

The Hamilton County Professional Fire Fighters are saddened to hear of the passing of Thomas H. Miller, President Emeritus of the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana and International Association of Fire Fighters General Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus.

President Jim Butts and the Executive Board extend their condolences and support to Barb, their children, and the members of Indianapolis Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 416, during this difficult time.

The Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana mourns the passing of our President Emeritus, Brother Tom Miller, whose lifetime of service and leadership helped shape the fire service, organized labor, and the lives of countless fire fighters across Indiana and North America.

Tom's service began in 1964 when he joined the United States Navy. After serving two tours of duty in Vietnam aboard the USS Tioga County, he returned home to Indianapolis, where he joined the Indianapolis Fire Department in 1968. A proud member of Indianapolis Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 416, he served as trustee and vice president before taking on leadership roles that would ultimately influence the fire service across Indiana and North America. Tom served as President of the PFFUI from 1978 to 2002, leading our organization through decades of growth and progress while steadfastly advocating for the rights, benefits, and safety of professional fire fighters. His influence extended far beyond Indiana, through his service as IAFF 8th District Vice President and later as General Secretary-Treasurer of the International Association of Fire Fighters.

Tom's commitment to the fire service was deeply personal. After losing his father, an Indianapolis firefighter, in the line of duty when he was just nine years old, he dedicated his life to serving others. Throughout his career, Tom was a tireless advocate for active and retired fire fighters, particularly on pensions and benefits. His work on behalf of Indiana's public safety professionals leaves a legacy that will continue to benefit generations of fire fighters and their families.

While Tom's accomplishments were extraordinary, those who knew him best will remember his sense of humor, his unwavering loyalty, and his willingness to help anyone in need. In his own words, he simply wanted to be remembered as someone who liked to help people. Few individuals have lived that principle more fully.

The PFFUI extends its deepest condolences to his wife Barb, their children, the members of Indianapolis Local 416, and all who were fortunate enough to know and work alongside Tom.

His legacy lives on in the strength of our union, the protections secured for fire fighters, and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey of service.

Rest in peace, Brother Miller.

The PFFUI will share information regarding visitation and funeral services as soon as arrangements are finalized.

25 years ago, under clear blue skies, 102 minutes changed our nation forever.

Today, we remember the lives lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

We honor the fire fighters, paramedics, EMTs, police officers, military personnel, and ordinary Americans who showed extraordinary courage that day.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Their legacy lives on in all of us.

Last night, members of Jackson Township Fire Department Hamilton County, Sheridan Fire Department, and Westfield Fire Fighters Local 4416 responded to a serious motor vehicle collision.

Crews from all three departments worked side by side to safely extricate patients and provide advanced life support care. An air ambulance team also responded, allowing crews to get a patient to a higher level of care as quickly as possible.

Incidents like this take teamwork, training, and a lot of dedication. Great job by everyone who worked together on scene to care for those involved.

Overnight Crash Response

Engine 383 assisted Jackson Township Fire Department and Sheridan Fire Department on a three-vehicle crash with entrapment overnight.
Crews worked together to extricate patients, establish a helicopter landing zone, and provide patient care. A strong example of mutual aid and interdepartmental teamwork when it matters most.
