Healthy&Dwell, INC Helping those help themselves by providing safe supportive housing to improve the lives of people in need. In Hamilton Co.

Since the 1990’s mental health care beds and facilities have drastically decreased. The funding for programming has been cut and services along with it. Currently, there is a 2 week to 3 month waiting list for a bed at a state hospital. In addition, group homes who provide 24-hr care in a less restrictive environment are often not available long term and there are not enough. Indiana there are no group home settings for people with mental illness. There are also zero acute care beds to treat someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis. Healthy&Dwell, INC will work with city and county officials to improve the mental health care in this community.

Spoke with Jenna Stewart at the Noblesville Farmers Market to share the great work we do at Healthy&Dwell!

This morning at the Noblesville Farmers Market, I spoke with representatives of Healthy&Dwell, INC, a nonprofit organization that provides safe housing and ongoing support for adults living with serious mental illness in Hamilton County.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - “One in 5 American adults experiences some form of mental illness in any given year. And across the population, 1 in every 20 adults is living with a serious mental health condition such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or long-term recurring major depression.”

And, “a person’s access to housing can affect — and is affected by — mental health. Experiencing housing instability may contribute to stress, anxiety or other mental health symptoms. The symptoms of a serious mental health condition can also lead to housing instability.”

Ongoing conversations about mental health and housing are timely and relevant. Thank you to the nonprofit leaders who make a difference in people’s lives in our community!
