And we have another Co-Op Graduate! πŸŽ“πŸŽ‰

Hats off to Kathleen Schuman for her incredible accomplishment last week! After lots of hard work, dedication, and perseverance, she has officially graduated from Grace Care Center's Co-Op Program. Through the program, she met regularly with a life and financial mentor, set meaningful goals, and took intentional steps toward greater stability and independence.

Graduation isn't just about completing a program, it's about the progress made, obstacles overcome, and the brighter future ahead. We are so proud of all Kathleen has accomplished and can't wait to see what comes next.

How long have you served in the Grace Care Center?
I have supported the Co-op and Foundation for 8 years but served for 2 Β½ years. I am a newbie by almost all standards compared to the great volunteers that serve there!

What area do you serve in and why?
I serve as a Financial Counselor in the Co-op on Wednesday mornings. I think this is the best use of my skills as I have been a project manager and finance major. I serve there because I think I make a difference listening to people and helping them reduce their expenses and understand/make a budget. But it is really about the relationships I make and the hope I try to bring to their situation.

What keeps you coming back?
For each setback, there is a step forward or something to learn for both the friend and me. I have worked on several difficult financial situations with my own parents and in-laws and learned quite a bit about services available for the elderly. So, it is important and humbles me when I see the friend's financial or personal struggle and can suggest something that may help. I also hear how they feel about their families and consider what I could do better in my own family.

How has serving in the Grace Care Center changed you?
It has helped me develop empathy and understanding for those needing public assistance and other underlying reasons. It has taught me patience and perseverance because I may have tons of suggestions and ultimately, the timing and priority of the friend's time to spend towards these ideas is up to them. I can't "Project Manage" this for them, but I can encourage and help them take it one step at a time.

Tell us one fun fact about yourself.
Since retiring at the end of 2017 and moving to Cicero, I really enjoy flower gardening. I think about all my flowering plants as children and am so proud of them!

How long have you served in the Grace Care Center?
Since November of 2024!

What area do you serve in and why?
I serve in the co-op as a life coach every Tuesday night. I knew Jed as he was the co-leader of our Rooted small group at Grace Fishers way back in the day. I met with him to see what opportunities there would be to serve with him at the Care Center. When he told me about the co-op and that he was looking for coaches, it seemed like a perfect fit for me (as I've spent a lot of time coaching our staff and interns in my ministry with Cru). I love coming alongside people to listen to them talk about their lives and, when appropriate, give input/perspective to help them grow. I especially enjoy talking with others about the spiritual area of life and I get to do that often at the co-op!

What keeps you coming back?
Mostly I just really care about people and listening to their struggles and encouraging them! In the past year and a half, my co-coach, Heather, and I have seen God work in people's lives in some really cool ways. It's such a privilege getting to listen to and bring hope to people, and we get to pray with them often. We even saw one guy pray with us to invite Jesus to come into his life. That was awesome!

How has serving in the Grace Care Center changed you?
Well, it has made me a better listener for sure! And even though I'm technically coaching the people who come to the co-op, I have learned so much from each one of them. These friends are so humble and are daily looking to and trusting God to meet their needs. From their examples, I have learned to depend on God more in my own life and to be more grateful and thankful for all the ways that He takes care of me and my family!

Tell us one fun fact about yourself.
A new favorite hobby for me is playing pinball. My friend got me into it about a year ago, and we have done a few road trips to visit places that have hundreds of pinball tables. You pay about $20 to play as much pinball as you want for about 12 hours. It's a blast!

We had some English Class graduations last week! πŸŽ“

Through Grace Care Center, we offer English classes to help our friends improve their speaking and writing skills for future jobs and everyday opportunities. We are SO proud of them as they continue to achieve their goals. This past semester we had 10 graduates. Congratulations to them all!

Here are just a few of them featured in these photos: JosΓ©, Jogisa, Ariana, Rafael, Geraldine, and MarΓa. Congratulations to all of our graduates! πŸ‘

How long have you served in the Grace Care Center?
It was either 2013 or 2014 that I started on Tuesday nights on the pantry register.

What area do you serve in and why?
Currently I serve in Monday night English class and Wednesday morning either on freezer board or as a personal shopper.

What keeps you coming back?
Both of those jobs are so rewarding. I love seeing how hard our English students work and it's easy to develop quite good friendships with them over a whole year of classes. And Wednesday morning is special too because I tend to see the same people week after week and begin to know their names and learn things about them and their families. It's also helping me brush up on my very rusty Spanish.

How has serving in the Grace Care Center changed you?
My heart has definitely been expanded for people who have fallen on hard times and people coming from other countries to make a life here, since I started volunteering. It's so exciting to be part of something that is so well done. I'm just so proud of Grace for continuing to fine tune all the various aspects of the Care Center. I LOVE my church!

Many people are not aware that I grew up in the jungle in Peru, South America.

17 NEW JOBS secured by our Co-Op friends in the last several months! πŸŽ‰πŸ’Ό

Here are just 5 of the incredible individuals celebrating this milestone: Javier, Maricarmen, Veronica, Ely, and Maria. We couldn’t be prouder of each of them and all of the hard work it took to get here.

A special thank you to our life and financial coaching volunteers who walked alongside them every step of the way. Your encouragement and support make stories like these possible. Cheers to many more accomplishments to come!
