Louis Braille was born in 1809 — and that’s why we celebrate each year on January 4. NLS has a world of braille materials and resources available for free to its patrons. You can learn more about braille at www.loc.gov/nls/services-and-resources/braille-education?loclr=fbnls and find braille books in the NLS Catalog by searching https://nlscatalog.loc.gov?loclr=fbnls. NLS initiatives supporting braille literacy include our free Braille eReader (interested patrons should ask their NLS network library about getting one of these electronic braille displays). NLS also offers Braille on Demand, which allows patrons to select braille titles from BARD (our Braille and Audio Reading Download online service) to be printed in hard-copy braille and sent to their home on long-term loan. To learn more and to request your own braille books, visit www.surveymonkey.com/r/NLSbrailleondemand.

Tiny dots. Big impact.
Happy World Braille Day! We’re thrilled to partner with Mattel on a Hot Wheels® die-cast car featuring braille —bringing braille into play and making toys more inclusive. You can find the die-cast car wherever Hot Wheels are sold. Braille empowers literacy, confidence, and FUN at every age.

Today we celebrate World Braille Day, and the power of literacy, access, and independence.

January 4 marks Louis Braille's birthday, whose tactile writing system transformed education and opportunity for individuals who are blind or DeafBlind worldwide. It also launches Braille Literacy Month, a time to honor how braille literacy expands access to information, communication, and participation.

Braille isn't just dots on a page, it's direct access to written language. For the DeafBlind community especially, braille serves as a primary communication pathway, enabling connection to information and conversations when audio alternatives aren't accessible. Whether through traditional braille, refreshable braille displays, or tactile graphics, braille opens doors to learning, employment, and everyday autonomy.

At Helen Keller Services, we see this every day. Our participants use braille to read job training materials, access technology through braille displays, and engage with the world on their own terms. From our vocational rehabilitations program to our technology training, we're committed to advancing braille access in education, employment, digital spaces, and beyond.

Braille is empowerment. It's access. It's independence.

Today is World Braille Day, a time to honor the birthday of Louis Braille. Braille represents independence, literacy, and the power of communication for people who are blind or have low vision. As we celebrate his legacy today, we remain committed to advocating for a world where information is accessible to everyone, everywhere.

We just want to take a second and wish all of you a very Merry Christmas. Everyone can receive the greatest Christmas gift ever which is eternal life. You can receive salvation because God sent his Son to die on the cross for us. Jesus came to earth as a baby, born in a manger and grew up and lived a perfect life to take the punishment for the world. So this Christmas, we challenge you to reflect on your relationship with Christ and if you don't have one, we challenge you to seek one if God is calling you, which he is always waiting with open arms. If you have any questions about what a relationship with Christ is like or need some direction on how to obtain this gift, don't hestitate to reach out to us and we will love to help in any way we can.
