Inside Downtown Nixa

This week we’re highlighting the amazing team at the Christian County Ambulance District Nixa Station, proudly serving our community with emergency medical services day and night.

Pictured left to right: Christie Thompson, Director of CCAD, Kellee Semans, CoxHealth Paramedic, and Jacqelynde Gallant, CoxHealth EMT.

Established in 1984, CCAD provides emergency medical services throughout Christian County (except the panhandle) and part of Stone County. They are the only EMS service for the Nixa area and average around 625 calls each month while operating multiple Advanced Life Support units daily. CCAD also holds a performance-based contract with CoxHealth for services, helping provide high-quality emergency medical care throughout the district.

Beyond emergency response, CCAD also gives back through community programs including discounted CPR and First Aid classes, free car seat inspections and installations, and programs designed to help keep families and seniors safe.

We’re grateful to have a CCAD station right in Downtown Nixa, serving our community with compassion, professionalism, and quick response when people need help most. Thank you to the entire CCAD team for all you do for Nixa and the surrounding communities!

Around Downtown Nixa

There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes to bring community events to life, and the Nixa Multicultural Festival is no exception.

Pictured are Chris Huett, Electric Superintendent, Summer Rascoll, Communications Director, and Rebekka Coffey, City Clerk and festival coordinator, three of the many people helping organize this incredible event in Downtown Nixa.

From vendor coordination and promotional materials to power setup, logistics, and event planning, it truly takes an entire team working together to make it all happen. Other departments involved include Planning & Development Director Scott Godbey, who assists with festival layout and mapping, Street Superintendent Jeff Roussell and his crew coordinating street closures and traffic control, Parks Director Matt Crouse overseeing seating and event accommodations, and Police Chief Joe Campbell and local officers helping ensure the event remains safe and welcoming for everyone attending.

In addition to city staff, volunteers and community partners also play an important role throughout the festival helping with setup, cleanup, guest assistance, and creating a welcoming experience for attendees.

The Nixa Multicultural Festival has become a wonderful celebration of culture, community, music, dance, food, and connection right here in Downtown Nixa.

Inside Downtown Nixa

Meet Joanna Havice, owner of Violet Sky Salon, located at 200 S. Main Street in Downtown Nixa. Originally from the Bootheel of Missouri, Joanna moved to the area in 2006, made Nixa home in 2012, and purchased Violet Sky Salon in July 2017. This July marks 9 years in her downtown location.

Joanna has been in the beauty industry for over 20 years, specializing in hair color while also offering cutting, waxing, and nail services. Her passion for helping people feel confident and beautiful shines through in everything she does.

Outside of the salon, Joanna is a proud mom of four Ian, Keela, Rowan, and Duncan. She also holds a degree in Mortuary Science from St. Louis Community College, adding another unique chapter to her story.

Meet Rich & Leah Callahan, owners of 14 Mill Market, Southwest Missouri’s first food hall and a place that has quickly become a gathering spot for the Nixa community.

After discovering the property in 2021, Rich & Leah set out to create something unique for Nixa while also honoring the history of the old Wisner Mill site. Today, 14 Mill Market brings together local food vendors, live music, community events, outdoor gathering spaces, and a welcoming atmosphere all under one roof.

This June, they’ll be celebrating the 3rd Anniversary of 14 Mill Market, marking three years of food, family, community, and creating memorable experiences in Downtown Nixa. From concerts and special events to everyday lunches and nights out with friends, 14 Mill Market has become a destination that continues to bring people together.

Be sure to stop by, celebrate their anniversary in June, and support this family-owned business that has helped make Downtown Nixa such a vibrant place to gather.

Inside Downtown Nixa: Big Al’s Subs/Crab Shack

Today we’re introducing Allan Willoughby, owner of Big Al’s Subs/Crab Shack in Downtown Nixa.

What started as Big Al’s Subs in 2015 has grown into a local favorite known for fresh, loaded subs, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere. In 2018, Allan purchased and remodeled the building at 420 N. Main Street, continuing to invest in the downtown community. After another remodel and expansion in 2024, Big Al’s now combines both the sub shop and Crab Shack under one roof.

From hot and cold sandwiches to baked potatoes, smoothies, breakfast favorites, and seafood nights at the Crab Shack, Big Al’s has become a go-to spot for many in Nixa and the surrounding 417 area.

This series is all about highlighting the people behind the businesses that help make Downtown Nixa special and Allan is one of those local faces helping serve the community every day.

Meet Cory & Ashley Johnson, owners of Firehouse Flooring, located at 109 S Main Street in Downtown Nixa.

This family-owned business brings over 15 years of flooring experience to the community, offering everything from carpet and tile to luxury vinyl, hardwood, laminate, and commercial flooring solutions. Their downtown showroom helps customers explore flooring options while receiving personalized guidance throughout the entire process, from design and selection to installation and finishing touches.

Beyond the showroom, Cory and Ashley are deeply connected to the Nixa community. Cory serves with the Nixa Fire Protection District and was honored as Firefighter of the Year in 2022, while Ashley serves on the Christian County 100 Club Board of Directors, supporting families of fallen first responders. Their dedication to service and community shines both inside and outside their business.

Meet Martha Louderback, owner of Ladybug Floral & Gifts in Downtown Nixa.

Located in a beautiful historic stone building on Main Street, Ladybug Floral & Gifts has been part of the Nixa community since 2002. Martha took over the shop in December 2023 and brings her love for flowers, plants, people, and all things organic into the heart of her business.

Ladybug Floral is known for handcrafted floral arrangements, plants, gifts, and custom designs for special occasions with a fun signature touch: a hidden ladybug tucked into each creation.

We love celebrating artists who help shape Downtown Nixa.
Congratulations to François Larivière (ArtbyLariviere) on being commissioned for artwork featured at the Defenders of Freedom Award ceremony for Big Cedar Lodge & Bass Pro Shops.

François has a studio right here in Downtown Nixa and is the artist behind one of our downtown murals. We’re excited to see his work showcased on such a meaningful stage and proud to have his talent as part of our downtown creative community.
