The Watershed Center

The Watershed Center The Watershed Center protects and restores watersheds for people and the environment using a collaborative and science-based approach.

We are a stakeholder driven, non-profit organization located in Boulder County, Colorado that values science and community. We used sound science to monitor, assess, and manage our watersheds. We use data to plan and implement on-the-ground forest and river restoration projects. We aim to build a strong stewardship ethic in our community through place-based and participatory learning. At its core,

the Watershed Center strives for…

• Adaptively-Managed Watersheds: We use collaborative and science-based adaptive management to monitor and manage watershed health from the upland forests to the urban corridor.

• Community Engagement: We are building a community-wide stewardship ethic rooted in watershed science through place-based and participatory learning.

• Forest Restoration: We are leading a diverse partnership to address post-fire recovery and restoration, as well as landscape-scale forest health planning.

• River Restoration: We plan and implement on-the-ground projects that advance watershed restoration practices and incorporate climate change scenarios.

🔥As we dive deeper into an unusually warm winter, join The Watershed Center and Boulder Watershed Collective to learn about how local fire managers work year-round to prepare landscapes and communities for fire.

🍺Grab some snacks and a cold beer, watch a short film, and learn with us about a force of nature that effects us all!

🎥We'll screen "Fire Lives Here," a new film that explores the relationship between people, forest, and fire. Filmed over two years across Colorado’s Front Range, "Fire Lives Here" showcases the types of fire management actions taking place in your backyard.

🔎The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with an expert panel of local firefighters, forest managers, and ecologists.

📝This event is FREE, but registration is required! Reserve your spot at tinyurl.com/fireliveshere today.

Winter is Pile Burning Season in Northern Colorado. 🔥Slash pile burning is a helpful step in reducing hazardous fuels, improving forest health, and helping our communities become more resilient to wildfire.

After fuel reduction projects in overgrown forests, land managers often create piles of woody debris—called “slash.” When conditions are safe, trained fire professionals burn these piles in carefully controlled operations. Snow and cooler temperatures are key tools in helping contain fire behavior.

The Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest and Boulder County Open Space have announced their plans to burn piles this winter. Learn more about prescribed fire: https://nocofireshed.org/pile-burning/.

On September 6th, we gathered at Coulson Gulch for our Forestry & Fire Resilience Field Tour. The USDA Forest Service and City of Longmont shared how they’re managing forests to reduce wildfire risk and strengthen resilience. We were joined by partners from Boulder County Parks and Open Space and Wildfire Partners, Colorado State Forest Service, Northern Colorado Fireshed Collaborative, and local Conservation Districts - showcasing the power of collaboration in caring for our forests and communities. …………………………………………………………………. Over 1,100 of you responded to a survey we sent out this past year in partnership with the Wildfire Research Center and four fire protection districts - Lyons, Lefthand, Allenspark, and Pinewood Springs. …. 💰: 44% of respondents said that financial cost limits their ability to conduct mitigation - so we’re helping by obtaining grants for work on private land. …. 🪚: 49% of respondents said that physical ability limits their ability to conduct mitigation - so we’re helping by managing projects on private land and organizing a volunteer day next year! …. Just last week, we kicked off a community-wide fire mitigation and forest management project in Raymond/Riverside! This project (pictured) will increase forest resilience to fire, decrease risk to homes, and protect water supplies.
