Friends of Niskayuna Trails

Friends of Niskayuna Trails Volunteers are needed on and off the trails. All told there are hundreds of acres of trails.

The Friends of Niskayuna Trails (FONT) is a group of individuals who work to maintain, enhance, and promote the natural beauty of the trails of Niskayuna near Lock 7 in Niskayuna, New York. The Niskayuna trails comprise lands owned by the Town of Niskayuna (John F Brown Trail System), New York State (Mohawk River State Park), the Lisha Kill (Nature Conservancy), and Niagara Mohawk.

During the snow storm, I walked the trails at the end of Whitmyer Drive. There were many downed branches that I moved out of the way. Sadly, a huge double branch broke from a tree by the newly-constructed bridge at the left side of the water treatment facility. The branch pushed into the left railing, pushing out the railing’s bottom attachment points. The rail is still weakly attached, but wobbly. We will have to reinforce in the spring. The downed branch was too awkward/heavy for me to move by myself in the storm.

Spotted so far this season crossing from the park trails over to our yard: deer, turkeys, young skunk, and tons of rabbits. Also heard the pileated woodpecker, but didn't see him.

I tried to mow the trailhead for the first time, but as I drove the mower across the street, it ran out of gas on the side of the road. I had no more gas in the garage, so I poured out the spittle of gas that was in the bottom corner of four gas cans... just enough to get the mower back across the street and into the garage before it died again. Lol. Will try again, folks. Sorry! ... Amy H

A great Eagle Scout project led to a beautiful bridge over the creek behind the treatment plant. Thank you David N!

The cover image is of trout lilies. Last year, they were in bloom the first week of May.

A real winter. The first on the trails in a few years. Waiting for things to clear up before doing more trail work. If you see something that needs attention (and you can't fix it yourself) send a note to this page.

Also, there is some work being done to create a simple trail off the end of Stanford Dr, an area adjacent to the Woodlawn Preserve (but not part of it). A 10-pt buck was recently sighted, coming out of there. Be warned, it's still pretty rough in there in spots.

The trails should be fairly visible as there was some recent blowing of the leaves off the trail. But the leaves keep falling so it might be getting hidden again.

No trail work party this weekend.
