The “From Pullman Car to Soul Train: A Celebration and “Fundraiser” event was an evening filled with community, culture, and connection. Guests gathered at the SLO Railroad Museum, including hthe 100-year old Pullman rail car, enjoying great food, music, conversation, and an atmosphere that brought people together in celebration.

The evening’s focus was on the accomplishments of the members of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and Maids (BSCP). A slide presentation on the history and legacy of the BSCP and the on the daily lives of the porters and maids was very impactful.

The event reflected the spirit of the NAACP San Luis Obispo County Branch—building relationships while honoring the history and cultural contributions of the Black community. From sharing a meal together to music, dancing and fellowship, the event created space for both celebration and meaningful connection.

A special thank you goes to everyone who attended, volunteered, supported the event, and helped make the evening possible. Your participation keeps the wheels of community moving forward. We look forward to creating even more opportunities to gather, celebrate, and strengthen our community.

Honoring the Past, Empowering the Future.

“A perpetual state of excellence” What an impactful afternoon of film, conversation, and community.

Today, NAACP San Luis Obispo County, in partnership with R.A.C.E. Matters and Hatching Chick Media Group, brought our community together at the Palm Theatre for a screening of Disciples of a Craftsman. The film opened the door to important conversations about grief, redemption, cultural identity, community violence, fatherhood, healing, and the choices that can change the direction of a life.

Following the screening, our community panel and audience discussion reminded us why gatherings like this matter. Real change requires more than watching a story—it requires us to listen to one another, have difficult conversations, strengthen families, support healing, and turn dialogue into action. We are grateful to our filmmakers, panelists, partners, volunteers, and everyone who showed up and shared their perspectives.

Most importantly, thank you to our community. Your attendance directly supported independent filmmakers while also helping NAACP San Luis Obispo County continue programming and future events that educate, connect, and strengthen our community.

The film may be over, but the conversation continues.
